Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Is anyone else experiencing horrible GPS?

Ok, so which apps are you running that are not native to the device?

These are all that I've downloaded so far. Some I have not even run yet since I just got this replacement yesterday afternoon.

MLB At Bat
BBM
Chromecast
Facebook
GPS Test
GPS Status (downloaded, but have not tried that yet)
Imgur
MapMyRun
My24
Netflix
OK Cupid
Orbitz
Plume
Timehop
Tinychat
Trip Advisor
TV Guide
WeatherBug
WhatsApp
Words With Friends

With the exception of GPS Test and GPS Status, I've had all of these on my previous devices. The GPS ones are just to help determine/fix my GPS problems.

Welp, I'm on my 3rd replacement, so 4 phones total all experiencing the same issue. What the heck is wrong??? I took to youtube and tried recalibrating my compass and tightening the screws underneath the battery door (which seemed tight enough all ready so I didn't force them). I just don't understand!

I've tried:

Factory resets
Clearing the cache
I got my firmware reflashed at a Samsung kiosk at Best Buy
Make sure high accuracy mode is enabled (these days I never take it off since I'm always fiddling with my GPS)
Tried a number of gps fix apps in the play store
Samsung support reps have tried using the Smart Tutor app to remote into my phone, but they haven't been able to stay on long enough for me to get in my car and start driving. They either disconnect the session or the session drops.

Yeesh, I was afraid of this. I remember having GPS issues with my GS3, never on my Moto phones, you should never need to tinker to make it work. Guess I'll look elsewhere, maybe another Moto...

If it's just me, that's good news. I'll just exchange my phone. But it rarely locks on, and when it does it's a couple blocks off. I've tried two tests, about 20 minutes each while driving, and the skies have been clear.
I use mine ever day with My Tracks for walking and it is as good or better as any phone I have had. Overall (phone wifi gps data) reception is the best of any phone I have had. I would exchange it.

Re: Is anyone else experiencing horrible GPS?

An update - I exchanged my device for another one yesterday, and I'm STILL getting the same problems. I'd blame network issues, but my previous devices have not had this problem at all (not counting the Samsung Vibrant...). I got a tip on another forum to try a GPS fix app. I never knew something like that existed! I downloaded one that looks promising and will try it on the way home.
When I am out using My Tracks GPS works just as well on GPS only as the high accuracy setting. I really don't think its a network issues. Wish I could tell you what issue it is.

Re: Is anyone else experiencing horrible GPS?

been using mine daily with no problems. only set for "GPS only"

Used mine today and worked great.

I am in the process of making my Note 4 self aware.

I've been having similar issues with the GPS on my T-mobile Note 4. The only thing that's improved it is removing the SD card and using the phone without one. Could you give this a try, if you've even been using an SD card and let me know if signal improves?

Mine told me I was in Las Vegas for a week, I live in Pennsylvania and never have even been on that side of the US.

Could everyone please post their carrier I saw another person with tmobile like myself having the same problem those that have good gps function are you on tmobile???? Thanks.

I'm on T-Mobile and had issues on my Note 4 concerning GPS lock. Replacing my sim card fixed my issues.

Was on AT&T and had the same GPS issue (lost signal). Unlocked and switched to TMobile. Same deal. It's not the carrier or the signal or the software or the case or the app or the sd card or the sim card...

It's the device. The GPS in the Note 4 sucks just like it did in the Note 3. Bye bye Samsung.

Strange.. I've never had any GPS problems, either with my Note 2 or my Note 4.

Just a note.. Stand alone GPS units, (Like the Garmin Nuvi or Magellan Roadmate for instance) have much larger satellite antennas because the whole unit is dedicated to one task. Mobile phones squeeze a lot of other hardware into the case, so to keep phones small and thin, the GPS receiving antennas they use are tiny and far less efficient.

To make up for this inefficiency, instead of using regular GPS (Like the Nuvi), cell phones use what is known as Assisted GPS (A-GPS).

With A-GPS, the cell towers do much of the work. The cell towers have GPS receiving capabilities.. They get the GPS lock then pass this satellite data over to the phone by way of the cellular network. This allows the phones to get a faster lock when first turned on, and it helps out when the phone is shielded from the GPS satellites.

With no GPS signal, the phones location can be determined through cell tower triangulation.

While it's not certain, it is possible that bad GPS performance could be related to the carrier's capabilities.

When I use Waze or Google maps, I rarely have an issue. When I use Endomondo for mountain biking, it locks on and stays there always. To disclose, I have not tried any of the above since 5.0.1 with exception of opening Google Maps while in my house one time. It pinpointed my location spot-on though.

Mine locks on fast and stays locked on, mostly, but occasionally the GPS will just "stick" in one place for a bit, then suddenly either "catch up" or lose GPS lock entirely for 10 seconds or so and then reappear where I actually am. On my 30 minute commute, this will happen on average 2-3 times now. Mine is an AT&T Note 4, and they seem to be having more than their share of GPS issues. Lollipop did not help.

Things that seem to have helped a bit, maybe?
- Under WiFi, turning off "smart network switch"
- Under More Networks / Mobile Networks / Mobile Data, turning off "Enhanced 4G LTE Services"

I had similar problems with my GPS when I first got the phone. Turned out it was the SD card I was using. Swapped it out for a different card and the problems went away.

My GPS and navigation works just fine on my Note 4 and I use it quite frequently. I use Google Maps and I'm located in Queens NY. I had some issues when I had the Note 3 but after I swapped my SIM it worked great. I hope everyone finds a fix for this issue and it's a shame because the Note 4 is the best device on the market IMO.
