Samsung Galaxy S3 charging issue

I'm not questioning your experience, but the charging circuit in the phone should prevent an overdraw of current from the charger, and the charger should have its own circuit to prevent an overdraw of current. So in either case there shouldn't be any way to cause damage to the charger.

Are you sure it's not something with the charger cable (assuming that it's a separate cable)? Do these chargers work on other phones after they no longer work on yours?

I had originally came here looking for the answer to this problem as well, but while fiddling I seem to have fixed it and wondered if it would work for anyone else.

I removed the battery and the charger cord, then plugged the phone into the cord without the battery at first. It vibrated once, then I popped the battery in. Seems to be working just fine for me now.

Maybe give it a try? :)

ive had the same problem too, ive had the phone about 4 months i charge my phone and after a bit or so it will drop down percentage wise.
I took into store (EE) to see the about problem, they showed me a different way or charging it because they said my phonecase may of been putting pressure onto it, it seemed to work when i was in store. When i got home to continue charging phone i charged the phone the way they taught me and the percentage dropped which i found weird because i did exactly what they did in store. I've used different plug sockets. I sometimes turn the phone of but it doesn't always work and when it does it doesn't go up alot. I dont know if its the battery or the charger. Because i used the same charger what i used in EE store and home, ive read a few posts on here. I've blew into where the charger connects, ive taken battery out, turned phone on+off. I am going to go and get my phone repaired again this week, But i am worried i will come across the same problem. I have the Samsung Galaxy s3 Mini.

xbethany,
It sounds like your case is interfering with the charging port. I hope you haven't damaged the port already; you may want to remove the case and see if the phone charges normally.

It should take no more than a few hours to go from partial charge to full charge unless you're using it heavily while it's charging.

Hi there
i have tried taking my phone case off and nothing has changed. When i have my phone switched on and i plug the charger in, my battery goes down. So i turned it off and charge it that way, lately it hasn't been working though. Im not sure what the problem is, thankyou for your help though much appreciated

xbethany,
Have you tried a different charger AND cable?
Can you swap batteries with someone just to eliminate that?

It's possible that something is wrong with the micro-USB port on the phone - your only option would be to use a wireless charging solution, which bypasses the micro-USB port. I just wouldn't want you to waste the $ on that option unless you've eliminated all other possibilities.

Hi,

I had the same issue with my s3.. it started off with slow charging to the point where in it would charge only 20% in 6 hours.. and it ultimately ended up in not getting charged at all.. i showed it at a service centre and they got my motherboard and usb changed.. thankfully it was in warranty..the charging issue got corrected after that one wierd thing was that a Nokia usb (Old E series)used to charge my phone just fine, but a sony/samsung/others wouldn't..

I just got this phone off eBay and it won't charge. I didn't know the S3 had this problem until I found this forum. I will be emailing the seller!

Just thought I'd add my $.02. Like so many others (way too many) I had my S3 less than 2 months when charging started getting flaky. I could wiggle or push in the cable harder and then it would work but sometimes it would be beeping and alternating between working and not working and progress was very slow. Then suddenly no charger (3) or USB cable(1) in my house would work no matter what I did, nor did my car charger. The fact that it felt wiggly told me the USB port was flimsy. I stopped by a Boost Mobile store to see if they had an OEM charger for sale separately. They didn't but when I asked to plug into a charger they had there, it worked. No blinking on and off or any wiggliness, it just seemed to work like it should. On my way home I found another old USB cable from an old HTC EVO in my car. I tried it when I got home and it works perfectly also. It's really hard to tell what's going on here but I don't like it. Someone can argue that some chargers don't put out enough juice but that doesn't explain why a new USB cable that works on everything else doesn't work on my S3 while a raggedy old HTC cable with exposed and frayed shielding, connected to the same PC USB port, works without a hitch. Maybe it's just the quality of the wire or something about how the contacts make contact, I don't know.

I had this problem, initially, with car charger as it would only charge when connecting cable was in a certain position in relation to phone/connector. It still charged ok when connected to OEM charger. Same problem now occurring with the OEM charger and will take 24 Hours on occasion to get a full charge. Other times it charges rapidly. I was thinking of replacing the battery but, as this has already been tried, I'm guessing it may have so etching to do with the charging cable/connector, so am looking to replace that. It just may be a simple case of the lead socket wearing out due to the constant inserting into the phone. Hope that's all it is as, like you, am loathe to have to send it away for repair. Will let you know if this works.

Those of you that are having charging issues that are solved by wiggling the cable have either:
- damaged the cable - get a replacement (they're dirt cheap)
- damaged the micro-USB port on the phone
If the latter, you could consider a wireless charging solution - this totally bypasses the connector. (You could also find a local electronics repair place, or look online for some place that advertises that service, or DIY.)

Its probably your charge port......it may be damaged or a pin may be bent, you have to be careful plugging and unplugging the charger...

Problem Solved just do as i said:

1- turn off your s3
2- remove battery
3- put it back
4- hold the volume up button + Home button + power button
5- the device will vibrate that's when u should release your hand from power button
6- when the android system recovery menu displays release your hand from volume up button and menu button
7- navigate with the volume keys to the "wipe cache partition" and press the Power key to select
8- After user data deletes (it should take a few seconds only), press the Power key to reboot system now.

As we have performed with wipe all cache, I request to charge the device up to 100% and observe the device

my s3 worked like a charm after doing these steps , it's charging fast with no corruptions.
i hope it will fix your problem as well :) cheers !! good luck..

I used to have similar problems, and still do with some cables, I don't think there's any method to the madness. It doesn't see to be the battery as I have tried a few others. My advise is to keep trying with different combinations of cables and types of charging (wall, USB, car).
---
Also, sorry - unsure if this has been covered, but does anyone have the same problem as me?

When you are charging and get to 100%, and you then remove the cable, the phone dies. You then need to pull the battery out and put it back in to turn the phone back on.

I'd advise all of you to download the "Galaxy Charging Current" app.

It shows just how much power your charger is giving to your phone.
For my S3, the max is "999" but it was charging at only 100! This is why my battery was draining, even when on charge.

I tried different cables with my charger and found one that gave me between 900 and 999. Once I found it, my battery charged just like it did when I first got the phone instead of having to wait 3 hours just for 10%.

Hope this helps.

After reading your issues which I share, and your solutions, I can confirm that I have solved my issue.
All galaxy s3's come with those wall chargers that plug into a usb cable.
They are rubbish.
Luckily for me, I still had my galaxy s (1) wall direct charger. I plugged it in and Immediately I noticed a difference.
I'm using the phone full power with tontonnes of ram beinh consumed, but the charge keeps climbing.

5 minutes ago I was below 20% after a full 9 hours charge whilst it was turned off. Now Iam at 29% and climbing fast.

I assume other chargers would fix the issue for those without galaxy s chargers

My wife's 2A Note2 charger seems to work quickly on my S3.

I am not sure if charging current through the USB port is limited by firmware or kernel.
I would think 2A is a lot for a battery this size.

Mostly I just charge wirelessly overnight.
