I had this problem too.when i plugged,it shows charging.after unplugged after 3-4 Hours,it not charged anymore.i had to charge the battery via portable charger for a few months :( ..but finally i solved the problem after checked 100 of forums.! ill tell you what i did..maybe it helps you too..[first sorry for my bad English :( ] ..
There are couple of ways to solve this problem.,

1.Open the Dial pad.
2.Dial *#9900#
3.You can see a new window will open.
4.Scroll down to "Low Battery Dump".
5.Then Turn It "ON"...That's All..Restart the phone then Plug the charger and wait for several minutes.! And yeah this trick worked for me.and it stops my fast battery draining too..!

if the problem persist, try another few tricks too..

1.Go to CWM (Recovery Mode) by pressing Home + Volume Up + Power Button. Then Scroll Down For "Wipe Cache Partition" and Select "OK"Then Restart the phone.Don't worry its not wipe you personal data.!
2.Uninstall Unwanted apps.specially battery draining apps.!
3.Try to clean USB port with small brush.but be careful don't break the parts of in it..this tricks worked for my friend..he done this with a tooth bush :P
4.if the problem persist, Perform a fully factory reset with CWM..(but im not guarantee you loosing your datas.so before do this backup everything).
Finally check with another USB cable, charger(Blackberry,HTC,etc.) & battery.! still you facing problem, sorry its your bad luck :( send it to authorized service center..may be the problem with charging IC.!

I have a similar problem. My Samsung s3 wont charge sometimes but it is still recognized by the computer as a media device. I think its a hardware problem. Any ideas?

I seem to be having the same problem as well.
It can't be the charger; I've tried too many of them.
It isn't the OS; I have a perfectly working S3 Slim.
It isn't the battery; it's brand new.
My "hunch": USB port on the S3.
If you have to tinker with MULTIPLE chargers of various sorts, and you still cant charge it, it's the USB.
Solution: Get a local repairman to fix it (didn't work for me,) or get a wireless charger kit

My phone used to be doing this now it has swapped. It will charge but cant be recognized by my computer. I have tried different cables and computers and same result occurs. Any help!?

Have you tried removing the battery and cleaning the port with a pin and compressed air?
It is not uncommon for the micro usb port to be broken loose from the board.
Often it can be reflowed, but even if a new one is required the part itself is very inexpensive.
I posted before about someone on Ebay who offers 24 hr turnaround.

Yes i have, multiple times. After i do that it works fine for a day but the next day it does it again. I'm starting to think its a software problem as i can see no damage done to the circuit board.

Same charging issue with 3 month old Samsung Galaxy 3 phone.

I have the same issue with my Samsung Galaxy 3 phone not charging after owning it for only 3 months. I talked to Samsung's' customer Service and they lied to me twice. First time, they said they would send me out a new charging cord and battery. Never came. Second time, I did an online interaction with a Samsung customer service representative and she LIED to me saying the would send out a shipping package for me to send the phone to them and get it repaired for free. Never got it.This was only after I asked her " do you not even warranty your phone for 3 months??" She actually told me to bring it back to Target where I bought it from! We all know Target wasn't going to let me return that phone. Isn't there supposed to be Consumer Protections out there for us? We spend a lot of money on these smart phones. Some of these phones should probably be recalled for defects, like they do cars. I think a lot of us have defective phones and Samsung is not owning up to any of it.

I went to my local best buy mobile, and they said that it was the charging port in the phone, the prongs in it might have gotten loose. I am having this issue as well, what I have done that has helped temporarily was wedged a piece of card stock (the thickness of a business card) into the charging port above the actual prongs (if you look into the charging port on the bottom of your phone you will see a little board, put the paper over that and plug in the charger (sometimes the chargers don't fit properly, this is will make it snug so that the prongs from the charger connect to the ones in the charging port). Unfortunately it only work temporarily and it's not the best solution, but it does work. Another thing that I have done a couple time was hold down the power button and both volume buttons at the same time for 30 seconds, this has helped a couple times as well. Another thing you could do, which may be expensive, is get a battery charger (one that you can charge the actual battery itself outside of the phone) and also get another battery, that way you can swap batteries when needed. I have yet to save up enough money for another phone. Hope this helped.

Re: Samsung Galaxy S3 not charging

To anybody interested, I removed the back of my Samsung phone b/c it wouldn't charge! Under the cover I found a small hole ion the top left had corner which I pushed with the aid of a needle & hey presto, there was a small viabration & it started charging, so for those that are having trouble try this!

cheers!

I am having the same issue, I went to Samsung's chat support, this is what I was told, and this was actually the name of the person I was chatting with.

Shaniqua: Please perform the below steps:
Shaniqua: 1. Power the device off (remove and re-insert the battery).
Shaniqua: 2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
Shaniqua: 3. When the device vibrates; release only the Power key.
Shaniqua: 4. When the Android system recovery menu displays; release the Volume Up and the Home key.
Shaniqua: 5. Navigate with the Volume keys to the 'wipe cache partition' option and press the Power key to select.
Shaniqua: 6. After user data deletes, press the Power key to reboot system now.

Shaniqua: As we have performed with wipe all cache, I request to charge the device upto 100% and observe the device, if the issue persists, you can get back to us, we will be glad to assist you 24/7.

I hope this works, my phone is currently charging up to 100% and it seems to be fine so far.

I have been having the same problem, this phone is old now, but it worked fine for about a week after I got it, and then it started charging very slowly. I'll leave it on the charger for seven hours and it doesn't charge at all. I have tried turning it off, which does not fix the problem. Also, it loses battery when it's off, at a rate it wold lose battery if I was using it. I tried sending it to the repair shop and they couldn't fix it. I don't think there is a way to fix this issue. I think you just need to get a new phone.:-
