Samsung Galaxy S3 charging issue

I just experienced the same problem. It was only charging with 100ma.

Solution: Took a needle and cleaned out all the lint in the charge port on the phone (there was a lot more than I thought from looking at it) and in the cable connector. Now it is charging at 900ma and I can feel that the connection is rock solid again. It used to wobble and disconnect easily.

woke up at 430 am...phone would not charge, tried 5 different methods...finally loaded last page of this forum and saw the issue about cleaning the port.. grabbed a push pin and VERY GENTLY moved it around inside port. with it being late and dark i did not see any dirt but i did the best i could not to damage anything and blew air in it.. plugged it in and whoop..managed to get it to say its charging...sketchy but working.. absolutely a port issue combined with easily damaged cords... ALSO..sketchyness doubles when you have to play with the usb2.0 side of it........ and when i mean play i mean this phone is suchhhhh a ******* headache... gimme back something reliable,,, it is finally accepting a bit of a charge, atleast its going up not down!, had to try a few different spots, only my laptop is working

I have 2 Galaxy S3 and I found out by process of elimination, it is not the phone nor charger, but it is the cable.
1 cable is fine the other either charges slow or on off on off, you can see this more clearly when phone has about 10% power.
I have no chance to visit the service center yet, but will let u know the outcome.
Maybe for you and some others. But definitely NOT for me. I get the old "on/off/on/off" AND the incompatible charger message with any charger, any cable, directly to a computer, phone turned off. And STILL I get the charge/not charge thing along with the error message. It's quite simply a software problem. Not even a S3 problem as I've read the exact same thing on S4 forums. SO, I'm going with the OS as the issue.

... So, you need a charging port.

What's even more strange is that I have not (yet) had the problem repeat when I plug the phone into a different USB port on the other side of the computer. Switching ports on the same side (the USB 2.0 bank) doesn't eliminate the problem, but switching sides (to the USB 3.0 bank on the opposite side) seems to clear it up. I'm able to (mildly and cautiously) jostle the USB cable at the PC end without observing a break in the connection. Likewise I can (again CAUTIOUSLY) pick up the device itself and interact with it, e.g. to make an entry into my memo pad app. This might seem to suggest there could be an issue with that particular USB port on my computer, except that when I use the port (or any port on that side of the PC) with other accessories, such as a flash drive or external hub (while the phone is connected on the opposite side of the computer, or not connected at all) I have not observed any issues whatsoever. This is perplexing and I'd like to find a true solution.

I read through the post and tried all solutions:
- different charger, different USB cable, blow the hole, .... did not work for me.

Looking into the USB hole, I saw that over time, the small pin inside was slightly bent downwards. Tried to insert the USB cable with attention to capture the pin. It worked for me, hopefully for you too.:D

I've went through 3 phones within the past year because of charging issues. The charging port keeps going out on all of them. I am really careful with mine and don't use it while its on the charger, etc. but still keep going out. I've been told if I brought back to store again I might get charged for another phone. I don't understand why they keep messing up. I have heard others have the same problem and so has my husband. They are very poor charging ports that is why the Galaxy 5 changed ports, but yet, they want to blame me. I love the phone in itself, but get very aggravated with this situation. I don't know what to do anymore but thinking seriously about changing phones all together.

Welcome to the forums!
I don't know what to do anymore
You may want to consider a wireless charging solution - then you don't have to mess with the micro-USB port except on the rare occasion when you need to reload the firmware or make a backup or transfer files at high speed.

The past few weeks I have had issues with my S3 not charging correctly, then out of the blue it won't charge at all, so after searching a few forums I tried charging the phone whilst switched off, and for some reason it charges but very slowly, anyone else had this same problem and know of a fix? I have tried several chargers and in different sockets around the house, even tried using someone elses battery with still the same problem. I have always used the genuine & supplied charger. Any help would be much appriciated!!

My phone was not charging on the S3, i read to use a tootbrush on the usb port where you charge the phone and it gets the dust out. My phone started charging again.

I think everyone has the same problem but noticeing it different I have changed the battery I have changed the charging cord and I have also changed the charging source. The phone does charge up 100% but withing about 10 minutes even if I have not used it it is down to about 70% I have closed all the Apps I don't have anything running at all.

The problem is with the S3 so if anyone is going to buy the samsung s3 they may want to think second. I love Samsung products but the Samsung S3 is one of the worst phones to have been manufactured

That's obviously not supposed to happen. How long does it take to fully charge the battery? If you turn the phone completely off it should take no more than two hours to fully charge the battery (from about 20% remaining).

Did you buy a good quality battery (Samsung original; Anker; RAVPower)?

so i had the same issue but i decided to just see if i could charge the battery without going into the phone. took an old usb cord and stripped the wires. there should be a mesh shell a thin tinfoil shell then a red, black, white, green. So I popped off the back and put the black wire on the negative(-) slot on the battery and the red on the positive (+) part then my battery went from 10 percent to 70 percent in just an instant. i have been doing this for a little bit now and i havent had any other issues with it. i hope this can help a little

Ask21,
Your phone is reading the charger as the battery.

Connect your cable to the two brass wireless charging tabs in the frame on the side of the phone

Same problem exactly,,, I've rigged it so if I put something heavy on the part that plugs I to your phone,, it will charge,, again slowly,, and battery runs out so fast,, I'm gonna try a new battery

Had issues charging my s3 also. My husband has a friend who has his own mobile phone repair business & he said this is a problem for these phones. He repaired mine (said it involved soldering wires or a broken piece). Mine works great now & it only cost $40. Granted, I shouldn't have had to spend that since it's an obviously known defect, but I was glad it wasn't any more than that.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! This worked perfectly. I had alot of dust heaped up in the Micro USB port and now its charging is at 1000mA instead of 400mA or even 100mA.

I have had the same problem and I actually DID send it off to them to have it fixed it was still within warranty but they refused to fix it, I an highly disappointed in the lack of loyalty to their customers so now I am looking into getting it fixed by a 3rd party being an electrical tech person I have researched it and found that a common fault with the S3 in particular is a faulty charging port, the part itself is about $2.50 and then the cost of service, I'm getting it fixed this weekend.
