My s4 has suddenly started draining a lot of battery lately. In the battery usage section it shows the main culprit is android OS that drinks up 57% of the battery life. Out of the 9(around) hours it has been discharging, 8 hours 15 minutes it remains awake and the rest it sleeps.

That is high for the OS, I notice that right beneath it is Google Services. Are you by chance using Google+ or Hangouts? If so, you may want to try disabling those, temporarily, and see if it has any impact.

I'd get wake lock detector... See what's keeping the OS awake all night.

I am having the same problem. But its not every night. Usually only lose 15% or so overnight. But once it was 60% at midnight and dead at 7am. Now that I think of it, that night was right after I installed hangouts. Google services is always at the top when I have checked.

Here's mine overnight. You need to check what keeps your device awake, it's not normal at all. Get BBS or Wakelock Detector and scan your device for malware/viruses.

Getting external battery doesn't solve the problem. I have 18 hours and even more on battery (and i'm heavy user), so we need to help OP to get the same.

Battery life depends largely on usage, though. Unless we're all using the phone as little or as much in the same way it may be a challenge.

Sure but: I get 18 hours and i really use the phone playing games, browsing the net etc. OP has five hours doing nothing. Strange.

The best bet is probably airplane mode, unless the OP really needs the cellphone for phone calls. I have a weak signal like that and use a landline at home; with airplane mode on and only using wifi when I need it, I'm still at 70% battery after almost 48 hrs. on battery (only about 1 hr. of screen time, however); I know that's not typical usage, but it supports the point that how the phone is set up and used has a major impact on battery drain. I'm also using Snapdragon's BatteryGuru and Lux Auto Brightness to help control things like app sync and screen brightness that can drain the battery. Oddly enough, BatteryGuru requires that location services be on, but I found it will work as long as location services is on just with network/wifi, even when I have it in airplane mode and wifi off.

Got wakelock detector and found out there was this thing the "wlan_ctrl_wake". Its using up all my battery. Its an internal application

I may have found a solution to the problem after all. I guess it was the signal of my wifi channel which was below average. So I changed my channel and all seems fine for now.

That makes some sense. I have been having some WiFi issues. At my moms house I always seem to lose WiFi after a bit and have to reboot to get it back. And at home I have occasional WiFi problems.

I am having a similar problem but only in the last few days...82/83% Androis os usage. I even put it in flight mode...dropped 1% :S I have tried rebooting still the same
