Samsung Galaxy S6 Cell standby battery drain?

Re: Cell standby battery drain?

I've had this phone for a week now, and have had cell standby drain problems everyday, sometimes using up to 50% of my battery. Today, I charged my phone to 100% & turned off Wi-Fi & what do you know, after a couple of hours of heavy use, absolutely no cell standby drain at all.

IMO, for the large companies that Google & Samsung are, this is completely unacceptable.

I love Android & Google services as much as the next guy, but this ridiculous. This has got to be a top priority, as this is not just a bug, but a major bug that will undoubtedly turn away consumers.

Re: Cell standby battery drain?

Let me know if this solves the problem for you.

Not really...the drain stopped while in safe mode but now my Cell Standby is up to 34% (yesterday 21%) Android System is 23% (yesterday was 14%). I've only got like 5 days left to decide if I am going to keep the phone. If they can fix the battery I will.

Re: Cell standby battery drain?

Samsung support just told me since the safe mode stopped the battery drain then it's a 3rd party app & to uninstall any recent ones. I asked why my Cell Standby was at 34% and told them I have only installed 7 apps since getting the phone. I also informed them this is not an isolated incident, seem to be the norm vs the exception. Waiting patiently for a response...

"VoLTE is Settings - Connection - Mobile Network - Mobile Data - Un check Enhanced 4G LTE services."
I'm on AT&T with a 32GB S6 running Lollipop 5.0.2 and my cell standby was running 20-25%. My battery life had gotten better with the suggestions here, but still not good until I disabled the LTE setting as I quoted above which is above here somewhere in the thread. Now I'm mid -way through the day at 72% battery remaining and cell standby at 1%. The LTE setting did it for me! Thanks to all!

Re: Cell standby battery drain?

I saw some where that if your getting Cell Stand By that there is a default setting turned on you have to go to Connection Settings, and Turn off WiFi Calling and make sure it's always set to Cellular Network Preferred.

I did that yesterday. Not really sure it helped all that much. I get the worst drain at home on WiFi. AT 1:18 I had 47% battery, I have sent 3 text messages (no pics) and looked at Twitter for about 5 minutes. Now at 1:48 43%.
Who knows...Samsung wants me to uninstall the 7 apps I have on the phone...if I do that there is no reason to have the phone!

I'm going to ask this again as it seems that every time I ask it gets buried under hundreds of new threads and sadly, most of those are asking the same.

Besides, turning off, Smart Network and Scanning Always Available, both on Wifi Settings, and turning off Wifi Calling (turn it on only when needed) and VoLTE, can some of you that still have the Cell Standby drain check your wifi settings? I mean, I have posted this a couple of times and just 1 have tried it and confirmed today it was a lot better than before, but check if your Wifi router is 2.4 or 5Ghz, if you have both, just set your 2.4Ghz connection or force your phone to connect just to it. See what happens after a couple of hours.

You need to say users on T-Mobile should try this. This is not that big of a deal on AT&T even with VoLTE turned on, but with it turned off it is better on AT&T.

I'll bet wifi scanning is left on by default and also helps to hurt battery life for most people.

I need to check my router at home. I followed the rest of your instruction...thank you by the way. I'm on AT&T just FYI.

Re: Cell standby battery drain?

I might have discovered something important. Yesterday, to convince myself that turning off LTE service was really making the big difference that I thought, I turned it back on mid day when I had used about 30% of my battery. At that time cell standby wasn't even showing on the battery status. About 4 hours later cell standby was at 13%. Can't say much about battery use during that time except that I hardly unused the phone and capacity dropped maybe another 10%. The rapid increase in cell standby satisfied me that the LTE service was the culprit, so I turned LTE off again. Here's the thing - cell standby continued to increase to more than 20%over the next few hours! On a hunch, I powered the phone down, recharged the phone, and now no more cell standby! So if turning off LTE (on AT&T anyway) didn't help you, try a power cycle (a restart might work) after turning LTE off!

I did settings, and now cell standby doesn't even show up after 2 hours, but still losing 12% battery per hour. Turned screen down, moderate user.

This is a shame, if there is not a fix within a week I may need to switch to the m9, this is just crazy. How can wifi drain the battery faster then using cellular data and screen. I've done the suggested and i am still at 40%

Thanks! This worked for me, Galaxy S6 on AT&T (Android version 5.0.2).
- always scanning for wifi, smart network switch - are both in WiFi setting screen on upper right corner.
- VoLTE depends on carrier version. T-mobile has it in phone app setting and at&t has it in mobile network/mobile data setting
- Don't forget to reboot afterwards.

Battery life went from a disappointing <1 day to a quite ok 1.5+ days, and Cell Standby time went from 16% battery down to 1% for the day.

With regards to Wifi - always allow scanning I only have two options?

Scan Always
Scan only while Wifi is on

I'm assuming put it on scan only while wifi is on?

I have mine set to "Always allow Scanning" on my ATT S6 version, because I have some Tasker scripts that search for my home WiFi. With this option turned on, I haven't noticed any significant increase in batter drain. But, YMMV depending on your situation.

You have to wipe everything. Switch to phone off and then hold voice up, homebutton and power button all three. When you see the Samsung logo release the buttons.
You'll get a blue screen and then the boot menu. Delete the cache and afterwards wipe all data. Then restart the S6.
My battery life trippled after doing that. I had exactly the same problem you have.

I have rogers version of the s6 and don't see any voLTE or wifi calling options in either settings areas people have mentioned. Although I'm also currently roaming in europe.

You are listing features that are carrier related and not truly a Samsung feature.

So I'm guessing neither of these are affecting my battery life then if I don't have either setting? Sounds more troublesome than before now.

I understand that you are having issues with battery life, but can you remind me of what your SoT and standby is like, as well as what you are doing during this time. I can't say that I could help, but I'd like to remember just how bad your battery issues are. Screen shots are best, but just a description will be fine.
