Samsung Galaxy Watch: how to prevent watch from taking calls by default

I had the same problem on my Samsung Galaxy Watch. The watch was registered in phone as earpiece device and when I picked up phone call on the phone the audio defaulted to watch.
This is a watch icon in Bluetooth dialog on phone when paired as watch:

I've tried several things (reboot watch, reset watch, reboot phone) which did not help.
But accidentally I've tried something that suddenly registered my watch in bluetooth devices as watch and not as earpiece.
I did this:
1. bluetooth unpaired watch in phone
2. watch > settings > Connect to new phone > backup data (scroll down) > Connect using Bluetooth (yes) > pairing reqest on phone and watch
3. now the watch was registered correctly as watch and not as earpiece

Now if I pickup call on the phone the audio goes through phone speaker.

Simple fix here. I had the exact same issue - taking calls would result in the watch being used for voice and audio.

I simply unpaired the watch from my phone and paired it up again. Just took and call and voice and audio we're back through the phone again.

I think it was the latest update which has caused this.

I can confirm this worked for me on Watch3. Needed to do this after update to R840XXU1BTK1.

I can confirm that this also works on the Galaxy Watch 4. Unpair and then repair and audio and mic are only on your phone.

I know this is an older thread, but my S22Ultra recently started the issue. This is what finally fixed mine!

I had this issue randomly pop up on my Oppo X3 Pro today with my Galaxy Active 2. It started for no apparent reason- I can't use my phone mic or earpiece while the watch is connected. As soon as I disconnect it, I can.

I tried unpairing and re-pairing twice and still it won't allow me to use my phone mic. This is infuriating. I can't follow the procedure above exactly, because there's no option on the Galaxy Active 2 to 'Connect using Bluetooth'. I can connect it via the Wearable app, which is what it states I need to do on the watch, but this just results in it reconnecting and taking over my mic and earpiece again because it says I MUST have phone permissions available for the wearable app before it'll allow me to connect. So it's just setting it as the default audio device again.

Anyone have any suggestions? I literally have done nothing to cause this. I took a phonecall earlier today and my phone worked, tonight it doesn't. I haven't updated phone or watch in weeks.
