Samsung responds to Galaxy S4 storage woes

Probably, but their spokesperson defending the low storage did not know and was speaking on behalf of Samsung.

Exactly. One Samsung employee who has it wrong doesn't equate to all Samsung employees having it wrong.

Sheesh, why is this concept so difficult to understand?
The internal 16gb IS NOT, I repeat not ROM! Data stored there CAN and is constantly being modified. It is not "read only memory"

Not quite true. It is actually classified as ROM, but a specific type called EEPROM.

All these semantic debates are wasting energy in the wrong place. Channel the energy directly to Samsung and the equally wrong information pushing carriers. Simply put, sd cards are NOT going to increase app storage space and the carriers need to be pressured to offer at least the 32gb models. Give their CUSTOMERS that PAY them the CHOICE, rather than have the "let them eat cake" self anointed attitude toward their "peasant" customers. Dramatic? A tad perhaps.

The simple fact is Samsung and the carriers are spreading false information and need to be called out on it. Complacency will get us nowhere but 8/16gb S4 models. Who is to say the same level of ignorance is not also at the level of people making the carrier decisions of what size models to carry? Assume not? There is an acronym for assume.

Not a relevant response. We're talking about the present situation and current app code which isn't going to noticeably change for the next few years.

I beg to differ. I am newbie on this phone bit, but I can comment on the progress of technology. Every year the pace of technology increases and gets faster. In the pc world, it use to be a couple years for software and hardware. Now, both of them are updated almost monthly. With the fierce competition out there, a new tech can rendor something obsolete in a few months. Remember tape drives?

I am glad this debate is on, and it is thorough too. I am not a gamer, in fact a newbie, so the 16gb version would be way, way over my head, and overkill for me. However, reading this debate, I am waiting for the 32 gb version, although I might not ever install or play a game. My reasoning for the 32gb, is that will be the most desirable version down the line. I am going buy mine outright. And reading how even if you buy it outright from a carrier (T Mobile), that is still some flak on getting it unlocked.

Thanks to all the juicy feedback I have been reading, the best deal for me would be getting a 32gb factory unlocked version. I will be ready for any big updates, and my resale value would be good too.

Well obviously your not old enough to know what your talking about. It may be referred to that now but before cell phones (in the days of 120 meg hard drives) there were 3 distinct things... Storage, NEVER referred to as memory. Ram, always referred to as memory and ROM, like "CD roms".
Now it can be argued it's a matter of semantics but it has NOT (to put it your way), "always have been".
Learn something new or just remain ignorant of historical fact (respectfully).

I again, respectfully and courteously disagree.
First, I am 72 year old.
I was pushing pcs back when a xt and 30mb hard drive was considered a power user.
Technology is an exacting field. Terms can get thrown around, and some people can take them for fact, like you are doing here, doesn't make them correct. Even Samsung made an error with then stated the S4 has 2gb RAM, and 16gb ROM. Just like you, they are wrong. The 16gb is not ROM. It is MEMORY. Memory and Storage are the same, in case you didn't know. I say that with all the respect in the world.

Again to be technically and thoroughly correct, The S4 has 2gb primary memory RAM, and 16 gb of internal memory or secondary memory or you can call it storage..
Just because you something is never referred to as something doesn't change what it is. That is fact, not hearsay.

BTW, remembered when I upgraded my pc from 512k, to 640k. I spent $125 for the extra 128k of memory and I ran like I stole it.:) I recall when 4mb simms were $699 and PC books were stating that nobody in the world would ever have 16 mbs or RAM..:)

I said all this respectfully and courteously.:)

Good point!:)

Also, I think this is a marketing strategy on the part of Samsung. They are selling as many 16gb version as they can, and when the demand decreases, they will break out with the 32gb/64gb versions.

However, it seems like the strategy might backfire if they don't hurry up and make some announcements. I can see a lot of potential S4 buyers jumping ship to HTC and other phone brands simply on the marketing strategy of Samsung.

I think it a very relevant response. And, ironically, your second sentence sounds like more of the same. We are seeing larger and larger apps and that will inevitably accelerate as the hardware improves.

It's sad that mfgs/carriers are crippling these magnificent pocket computers with low storage.

Nothing's going to change noticeably in size of apps in 2 years. If anything needs to change by then it's internal storage size not more cheap slow outdated SD cards. Samsung took a step backwards.

So no. It was not a relevant response .

maybe not a noticeable change in app size but i imagine certainly in photo and video sizes with these 13mp cameras... i mean at full size how big are these photos and how big for a 2-5 minute video? how about a 60 minute video (I was recording my daughters one hour piano lesson with my N4 so for me a length like that wouldnt be uncommon)?

Then we agree to disagree. Status update in two years.

WOW, this is really getting old!
It's simple, the16GB S4 is going to be more then enough phone for 95% of the cell phone purchasing customer! That is why you see the focus on this phone! Like it or not, this is the customer that manufacturers, carriers, retailers, and the majority of developers are focused on! It may be a nice idea for these companies to build products just for the power user, but that doesn't go very far when it isn't profitable!

cheers

Then why was the S4 initially advertised offering 16Gb, 32Gb & 64Gb? IF they knew that 95% of customers would be happy with the 16Gb then why even offer the other two configurations? The two higher storage models could easily be special order items. Its happens all the time in retail. You PLEASE the paying customer to get their money. This is not rocket science. I'd rather pay for MORE internal memory than for SD memory.

Its like you are buying a new car and the dealer won't allow you to ORDER a car with a V6 engine because he is only stocking cars with 4-cylinders.

Amen to that.

I want 32gb of internal storage. Samsung announced that the device would be available in 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb configurations during their Radio City Music Hall song and dance.

I will wait for what I want to be available. I just wish they would make it available already!

If the larger versions were the available I don't people would be so upset about losing a few more gigs. I most likely won't need more than 8GBs of internal storage either, but it did bother me that I didn't have the choice of a larger version when I pre-ordered my S3.

With that said, most likely T Mobile will sell the 32gb
verison for about $739.. So, now I have gone from $640 to $740. However, they don't have it in stock
This is what I found when I google for the 32 gb...."We have confirmed that AT&T will indeed be carrying a 32GB Samsung Galaxy S4 in the future though it still won?t say when. We?ve also confirmed with Verizon that it has no plans to carry a 32GB Galaxy S4 in the days ahead, leaving consumers with a 16GB option only. We also reached out to the UnCarrier, T-Mobile, to see if it would be carrying larger options in the future and the answer was both good and bad
When asked whether it would be carrying a 32GB or 64GB Galaxy S4 in the future, the carrier replied with an extremely vague response"

My GS3 came with 11.95 GB of storage. Sure 2 gb less seems like a lot, but it is what it is. The ease of redownloading apps takes away a lot of the pain of keeping 1 gb+ apps on your phone, but let's face it, aside from a few intensive games, the majority of apps are from 20-200 mb+ etc. Get a cheap microSD card for your photos and videos and files. Be thankful that Samsung is one of the few manufacturers that still allows MicroSD card support. I didn't hear this much complaining when the Nexus 4 shipped with a pitiful 8 gb storage model and no sd expansion.

I also agree that Samsung should have shipped the 32 gb and 64 gb models on day one. Let those who want the extra memory, get them.

If this is from Gottamobile, they will not give their source. I can not find a corporate rep for Verizon say they will or will not. All I get is the only version Samsung can ship is the 16gb due to supply. Zero confirmation either way though if they will or will not carry the 16gb.

AC actually recommended getting the 16gb version because of lack of storage, and said a 32gb version should be offered.
