Samsung s5 battery drain Lollipop

Upgrading a Windows OS is still the worst way to install a new OS, and still leaves multiple bugs behind - upgrades are never advised, always fresh install - same is true for everything OS related

PITA yes, but still necessary in the majority of cases

Yea well I've always upgraded my Win7 installs and never had a single issue, i guess its more down to how you maintain your system. Anyway i did a factory reset for Lollipoop recently and its made no difference to the battery life when the screen is in use. Idle time is ok, but I'm getting roughly half the screentime i did when using Kitkat. Lollipoop uses more RAM its bound to suck some more battery, its as simple as that.

Just to add one more positive result for the factory reset fixing battery life. I to had major battery drain after upgrading to Andriod 5.0 (Verizon). I went from 2 days of usage to less than a day. I tried all kinds of things. Nothing worked. Finally gave in and did the factory reset, and then went through every setting to make sure there was nothing running I didn't need. For me not being a heavy user I found a good number of items I didn't need running, or use. I also went into " Applications" -> "all" and uninstalled or disabled all the bloat ware I didn't need. I've also keep the number of apps I have to a min. for now, just to see how things go before I install other apps. It hasn't been a full day since the reset, but there is a huge difference already. I reached 100% charge at 1:25AM, it's now 4:50PM and I still have 88%. My battery usage is saying that the Android OS and Android system together equal 5%. It's saying I have 4 days left on the charge. So, I would suggest doing a factory reset if you've upgraded. It's a pain to backup, but shouldn't you be backing up anyway? Good luck!!

Update (2/13/2015):
It's 10:03PM and I'm at 33%. I did install some apps, talk for about 1.5 hours total, and a number of other activities since the last post. At this rate I'll make it to morning before needing a charge, easy. Which is on par for what it use to be for me.

Contacts, apps, and app settings will auto backup to your gmail account if you have one, and it's configured on your phone right. I also make a backup to my PC. I just drag and drop what I need to backup. For example, I'll drag and drop the file folders that contain the important info of an app. Once the app is re-installed after the reset, you can put that info back into the app where you got it from. It's a little extra work, but I've never had a OMG I lost my data moment. There are a number of other ways, just personal preference.

Kies3 is probably the easiest way, but it misses things sometimes, so be aware. If in doubt backup all personal/critical data to your external SD card and/or PC. I usually backup my contacts/texts using Kies3 and then rely on Google to restore the rest. I use Nova so my homescreens and icons are all backed up to dropbox. If you dont use Nova then you need to setup your homescreens/icons again afterwards. However you do it, its a pain in the arse to get it back to how you like/want it and depending on how many apps you run it can take hours.

Battery drain was also a massive issue with me too. Screen lag as well. Oddly enough, Lollipop wouldn't work with my car's aux cable eaither. I usually use Google Maps to get around and it helps to hear the directions on the car's speakers. I just HAD to downgrade KitKat. It isn't pretty but dammit its efficient.

I wonder how many people here are playing Clash of Clans. That is the biggest battery drain factor for me. Every time I play it and then shut down the application, the device seems to warm up and lag big time.

If you read the article, it clearly stated it could be another app causing the battery drain as well....... "lol" Obviously if it worked on several phones, that means the OS was fine and third party apps are the culprit.View attachment 163803

What you on about? Yes i know that and i did read the article. But it quite clearly states that in their opinion (which i agree with btw) to fix part of the battery drain issue is to remove facebook and/or messenger. I'm simply saying what use is that if you need to use those apps! LUL

Anyway its more likely to be the wireless bug causing most of the battery drain, which was acknowledged and fixed by Google in 5.0.1

Cleared my cache which cured my battery woes....
1) power off the S5.
2) hold power, vol up, and home at same time until you see the blue recovery booting message at top of screen.
3) use volume down button and choose wipe cache partition
4) hit power button to execute wipe, you'll see it successful at bottom.
5) If not already selected, choose reboot device and hit power button to restart.

Very easy to do. Device does not run hot anymore. I will probably do this once a week just for piece of mind.

I'm having the same issue with my Verizon Galaxy S5 after updating and I can't seem to fix it even after disabling S Health and unistalling Google Fit.

After updating to Lollipop my ohne started to drain battery quite fast and warmed up. I lost 40% of battery in less than half a day.
I made the factoryreset and installed all applications again.
Now everything runs very smoothly and after 7 hours from charging I still have ~80% of battery left so I definitely recommed the factoryreset after installing Lollipop.

The warm phone/poor battery life is driving me nuts. As is the sluggishness after a couple days of use.

Thanks for the tips on Google Fit. You'd think that Google would at least test their apps with their own OS! Will have to disable it and see if that fixes the issues.

I can say this though - as soon as Apple releases an iPhone 6+ or 6s+ with 700a for T-Mobile this thing is going in the junk pile. Android may have cool customization but the overall experience is a short step above garbage.

My battery drains from 100% to 87% in less then half an hour after a full charge. Also I personally hate the UI. The ugly white background and bright colours on all my screens is annoying, especially the ugly orange on the messages and calendars screens. Looks like they have now followed Apple’s IOS. The nice dark green and black colours used were just fine by me. The UI now looks gimmicky. I may consider downgrading if not fixed soon.

Mine did similar to yours. I did a factory reset and the battery drain is nearly back to where it was on kit kat.

What seems to have worked for me was pinpointing the Google Fit. I didn't have it installed, but I did have Strava installed and there was an option "Link to other services" for Google Fit. Once I unchecked that, the device cooled down and stopped draining so heavily.

does clearing the cache remove anything (ie messages or pics)?
Thanks
also, any idea on release of 5.0.2
i have an s5 on verizon and battery drains much more rapidly than kitkat and it overheats constantly.
thanks
