What are the pros and cons with saving photos in HEIC format? It is a relatively new standard and I have never used it before. I normally use RAW image capture and eschew using JPEG capture.

How much better is it (other than file size) than saving photos in JPEG format? As a photographer, I've always associated image resolution with file size. The higher the resolution, the bigger the file. I've always shot at the highest resolution possible in order to get the most image data, which allowed me more flexibility post image capture processing.

The file size difference between JPEG and HEIC is about 44%; the HEIC file size is 44% less. With phones and SD cards coming in 128GB and larger sizes and at relatively cheap prices, what advantage do you really gain?

Currently, this format isn't supported by older versions of Android as well as no Windows support which IMHO is a significant disadvantage.

In Windows 10, you can download the HEIF Image Extensions package from the Store (free) to support HEIC formatted pictures.

Yes. I can open them with no problems on my Surface Pro and Dell desktop. Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop also support it.

I personally am not ready to use it because it's not mainstream yet.

It's been around since 2015. It hasn't gone mainstream because the requirement for smaller image and video files has largely been addressed by the increase in relatively inexpensive non-volatile flash memory. In 2013 when the requirement was submitted, microSD and SD cards topped out at 32GB and were relatively expensive. Now you can get a 512GB microSD for less than $100. In other words, Moore's Law essentially got rid of the need for HEIC.
