Sorry to say this but dude this is your fault. A phone with more glass is more prone to break. Verizon will not help you and its not their responsibility. I suggest you just call and put insurance on the phone, DO NOT let them know u broke it. A few days later file a claim. Because you have 30 days to insure the device I believe.

Yeah but that's insurance fraud, no? I guess it depends upon the term of your provider, but still.
The moral of the story is easy: this phone is fairly high quality, but it uses materials that must be cared for. Why the phone was in your lap when you got out of your car I do not know; I've done the same with my iPod, but that's because I throw that thing around like it's a softball. The Nexus is not a softball, and they (Samsung or anyone really) can't afford to make a phone a tank to insure it against clumsy negligence like that.
Do you (the OP) know how much the Nexus would cost--or any phone for that matter--if it were built to withstand stuff like that? And not just freak occurrences, but with a decent probability rate (70-80%+) of survival? Basic economics tells us that it would be ridiculous, and basic economics also tells us that we're getting the benefit of the phone as is.
So in all, take better care of your items. I've had an iPad for close to 1.5 years with no issues whatsoever. No screen protector, just a case and care. If it means putting your Nexus in a case (and by "means" I mean you're foolish not to IMHO) and making sure it's not where it can be easily damaged, that's what it means. But blaming Samsung, Google, Verizon, etc. for your own carelessness does nothing for the device, gadgets, or anyone else TBH.
Sorry about that. I take a lot of care with my devices and expect--or assume--that others do as well. When they don't, they bear the risk.
