Screen mirroring disconnects after vpn connected

I use PureVPN on my android phone to watch BBC iPlayer and it works great, however when I go to cast, the screen momentarily transfers to the TV, but then I get a connection error. Has anyone successfully casted BBC iPlayer from Android in the US through a VPN?
