Screen Overlay Detected - To Change This Permission......6P is messed up

I did the same as posted below by Jessica S. I have the Galaxy S7 and I reset app preferences from within the Applications --> More menu, then I restarted the phone. This seems to have fixed the problem with the screen overlay, but as Jessica stated you will have to re-allow your apps to access things that they already had access to before the update, in addition to re-selecting some default apps (like your default app for the home button). Oh, and you'll also have to disable (again) all the bloatware apps that came with the phone. This is a real pain in the *** and I don't know why this hasn't been resolved by the folks at Android. It must be a system update issue as I have none of the "problem" apps installed on my phone that others have listed in this forum. Whenever this crap happens the thought of going back to the iPhone enters my mind (briefly)....

I tried doing that too in my s7 edge.... but still it says the same.... then I disabled even the system functions.....but in vain.... plz help me out...

Has anyone got this error message? I'm trying to share a photo via facebook and whether from my gallery app or from facebook. It asks if I want to give FB access to my storage. I say yes. It says "Screen overlay detected- To change this permission setting you first have to turn off the screen overlay from Settings > Apps"

I do that but nothing works. Whether it says NO by FB's Screen Overlay allowed, or YES - it still just directs me in this endless loops. Have tried reboots and nothing. Anybody else experiencing anything similar?

OMG yes!!!! I have been struggling with this issue for a month!!! I have been to Verizon to see if they could help me but no luck! I think this happened after my last update on my phone. Literally everything I do that requires me to add a file or a picture or change anything tells me I have a screen overlay and I need to go into my system settings to fix it. I do as it tells me to do but there's never a fix and everything I search on the internet sends me in circles and nothing fixes it. Good Lord if you figure this out please let me know it's driving me crazy.

So I called Motorola. They were able to help & fix my issue with the 'screen overlay detected.' The tech said in the settings for 'Draw Over Other Apos' to select yes for all. Power off the device. Power back on. And it solved the issue. Hope that helps others.

I was having the sane issue as soon as I did the last update. I went to apps that can be on top in settings and put all as yes just like this then I shut down my phone and turned it back on and its working just fine now without the screen overlay problem anymore. This was the only thing that I could get to work. Thanks!

My Note5 did a system upgrade earlier this evening & completely wiped my phone when it restarted!! That's the very first time I have ever had that happen before. Also, the phone didn't automatically backup the phone before installing the upgrade. My understanding was that a backup was automatic & standard before inatalking upgrades. I had the option to restore the phone from the last backup from 2 days prior so I know it wasn't backed up. I'm really concerned about those issues!! Don't want it to happen again.

Anyway, now that I'm setting up my phone AGAIN, I'm getting this same message on nearly everything I'm doing. I've actually turned ALL applications listed under Draw Over Applications to OFF. I haven't done so with the applications listed under the System Applications Tab also in Draw Over Applications. I even found, on another feed about the same message, to open up developer options & turn Stay Awake (while charging) to off. Mine was already off. Also, I don't have any strange applications downloaded. Everything is pretty standard - Evernote, Pocket, Mozilla, Facebook, etc. Nothing from Cheetah. I didn't have this problem before the system upgrade! 😠 I only saw this message once or twice before. Now it's literally on every application I open, even in my contacts!!!! I've rebooted the phone 4 times since the system upgrade tonight too, completely turing off & turning back on rather than just restarting.

Still having this problem. I am still receiving the message on every application, even after turning ALL applications to off!!!! The phone was just completely wiped. I had to start over from scratch, selecting a language after the system upgrade. Do you really think I have to wipe it & start over AGAIN???? What if it backs up now & I don't want it to -- I don't want it to back up & reinstall anything that is causing this.

Someone, anyone, please help.... I'm stuck. Beating my head on the wall. And I've spent 5+ hours on the phone with Verizon in the past week about the lack of service at home & dropped calls despite my Network Extender, that I really do not want to call & spend another hour or 4 on the phone with them!! Thanks for listening to me rant. ☺😉 And thanks in advance for all help, time & consideration.

Guuuurrrrll! I was PI$$ED when that happened a few days back. I bought a Honor 5x just for my music and in the midst of recording new material, some "update" size was like 592kb or something like that very small. Anyways I updated it no problem.

Only to take pictures on the Honor while transferring the content from my other devices, bored. Well....the pictures showed as thumbnails on the device but would not open and had a 0 byte size when trying to access from computer.

After it installs this mysterious update, my device was reset! I have NEVER had this happen in all my years. Unless it's a complete wipe of course duh, but never updated my devices and lost data!!! I was so angry. I feel like I'm being stalked by CiA

Thanks for this forum. I was getting the same message and going to settings did not help. I uninstalled the CM security and Clean Master App>> restarted my phone(Samsung S6) and then i do not get the message again. yes, I do have to allow my apps for the permissions given them earlier, once again, but the error does not pop up anymore. I have reinstalled the CM apps and they do not cause a problem now. Hope that helps!

Hey guys! Hope this helps as it drove me nuts too for hours:

You may not need to uninstall anything or change any permissions. I was getting this loop of death while trying to use a new app, turned all permissions off, reset app data, rebooted, looked for CM apps, lumen, Twilight, etc, (none of which I had installed) NOTHING was helping and then I thought of the simplest thing and just

cranked my screen brightness to full and unchecked Auto brightness, switched back to the app and it worked instantly.

No more Screen Overlay Detected. This message pops because of an active app that is currently using an overlay, so if you see a FB chat head or if you are using your screen dimmed that seems to be what causes it most of the time for me.

Just happy I won't have to be turning off overlay permissions 20 times a day.

Hope this helps some of you!

I use note 5 and got the same problem in "Screen overlay detected". Finally, just follow your advice for adjust brightness and it solved this problems. Thank you so much guy!!

I found the culprit! Its hiding on the side top right of your screen. Its for those galaxy edge phones where you can swipe inward to show a home, back, multiwindow, and the "X" or close. Drag that to the center and a "remove" option will appear. Select "remove" and bingo! That fixed the "screen overlay detected". Now you can change your permissions without any hassle. Hope this helps everyone who's having this happen after that update.

I had this problem and I tried so many things until it was solved.
In my case it was the Side key panel which was causing this problem. Once I turned it off the problem was solved immediately!

The only thing that worked for me, on my S7 edge, was to reboot into Safe Mode. When in Safe Mode, you can alter the permissions required, then re-boot to normal. Bingo! All apps working again. Hope this helps. If you're unsure of how to enter safe mode, you hold the volume up key while rebooting.

I highly doubt this reply fixes everyone's problem, but I think I figured it out for those whose issue is NOT caused by the Lux app. If you have heads-up notifications or peeking or whatever it's called on, that's okay. However, if you get a notification, it's registered as a screen overlay. You'll have to wait for said notification to disappear.

Additionally, if you have chat bubbles enabled for any app that has enableable chat bubbles, most notably Facebook Messenger, you can't have any chat bubbles open. I spent 20 minutes texting a friend about this issue (Facebook Messenger is also my SMS app) and then I was like "I wonder what happens if I close the chat bubble." So I closed the chat bubble and not a single element on the screen so much as mentioned a screen overlay. Problem solved. Or at least some problems.

As for the root cause that results in Lux, Facebook Messenger, heads-up notifications, etc to not play well with changing permissions, someone who knows what the root cause is or how to fix it is not I.

hi
i had this problem.
i solved it.
it is because of 2 types of program.
just uninstall any locker such as cm locker or screen locker.
and also uninstall any floating bar such az home button.
after uninstall plz restart your smart phone.
and then you can go to application manager and after select any programm add all permission you need.
goodluck.

I had this issue. You have to go to settings> app> app that can appear on the screen. switch off floating on-screen app(s). Then go to settings> app> fb> permission. Switch on all the permissions. Now you can share photo with fb. And you can switch on your floating apps again.

Thanks for your input into this discussion. It was the answer for me. I had a feeling it might be my cm launcher, but it was the locker.

I had to replace my Nexus 6P and have received the device today.

I also have a Priv, on the Priv is where I first noticed this new dumb setting they call "screen overlay protection mess" or whatever. I was able to disable this annoying limitation but then it removes the productivity tab. If the productivity tab is disabled then I can manipulate app permissions as I choose without having to enable a "2 minute session" each time I want to change app permissions. I only noticed this on my Priv not my 6P.

Fast forward to now, I am setting up my new replacement 6P and WHAM! I haven't installed ANY other apps. I went through and disabled the Google apps and edited permissions. I go to my gmail where I have saved APK files I need to download. Nonetheless they are not downloading! I go into settings and see that gmail doesn't have access to storage. Upon clicking the apk file in the gmail app it does not prompt me to enable this permission, and when I try to change it, it gives me that DUMB screen overlay crap message, however nothing is working and gmail has a "yes" under it.

I come to this forum to see if there is a solution, nothing. I don't have a file manager or whatever other apps people were uninstalling.

So what I did do was do what I was gonna do next. Enable developer options (clicking the build number under about phone several times); and I enabled the system UI tuner (hold the settings gear icon in the drop down notification panel until it spins in a circle like 4secs).

GO back into my gmail and now the download icon arrow is showing next to the file, and I click it and I get prompted to allow gmail to access storage. All works now -_-

"My" conclusion is just enable developer options and system UI tuner. That is ALL I did and now I can

Screen overlay

I went to settings, device, applications, application manager, tap more in the yltop right hand corner, Apps that can appear on top, then disable all. Go back to your he screen and restart your phone. All your origimal permissions should go back to there default and your screen over lay should be fixed, worked for me, samsung note 5.
