"SD Card Missing" Prompts

Hi all. I have an HTC 10 on Verizon. I bought the phone during the original May release, and have recently been having problems with getting prompts about my SD card being "missing" even when it's plugged in.

My card is SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC UHS-I, Class 10. I set it up to run as Adoptable Storage. Apps are on my hard drive, while Music, Photos and video are saved on the card. Now with these issues, it's becoming increasingly difficult to use the camera, listen to tunes, etc.

Is this an Android issue? An HTC issue? An adoptable storage issue? And what is the best solution here - backup the card on my PC and reformat? I'm really hoping to avoid replacing a $40 SD card that's only three months old.

Finally, my last question - if I re-format, would using the card as External (rather than Adoptable) Storage lead to a noticeable performance lag?

its an adoptable storage problem... backup/reformat... then just use as external

Welcome to Android Central! The SD card could be corrupt, defective, or counterfeit. Install SD Insight to see if the card is genuine or counterfeit. Counterfeit cards are programmed to report more storage than they actually have, and if you try saving more than the card can actually hold, then files can start getting corrupt.

If it's a valid card, then go to Settings>Storage, Unmount the card, remove it, and insert it into your computer. Run chkdsk to look for bad sectors: http://forums.androidcentral.com/am...guide-using-chkdsk-fix-corrupted-sd-card.html.

There's certainly no lag. I have a ton of music on my SD card, and it plays flawlessly. Saving camera photos is instant as well.

The OP might be referring to lag for apps that are moved to SD. I believe that apps moved to SD (when the SD is set as Portable Storage) do suffer from some decrease in performance--it may depend on how fast the card is.

I had this happen to me as well, and it ended up being a bad card from SanDisk. Lost all my files, but luckily, my photos were already backed up. When you set up the card as adoptable storage, it gets encrypted and is both unreadable by your PC, and unusable in any other way. I tried to reformat the card in my computer, but it was a no-go. When I tried to reformat it in the phone, I got some kind of error. I ended up buying another card to replace it, but avoided SanDisk, despite their reputation.

I'm revisiting this thread, as it's the same card used in the OP, but with a new problem.

Per the OP, I had originally setup the card to be used for adaptable storage, but needed to reformat due to the above issues. Everything was working fine for a month or so, but I am now getting messages saying that the card is corrupted. My card is SanDisk Ultra 128GB microSDXC UHS-I, Class 10, and I have confirmed it’s not counterfeit.

At first, I got a notification that the card had unmounted unexpectedly, the card was being scanned for errors and I needed to manually unmount the card before rebooting. I was able to that once, removing and reinserting the card before turning the phone on. That worked briefly before the issue happened again. Now, the card is scanned for errors and then I get the notification of the card being corrupt.

It’s important to mention that these unmount issues both happened while charging the phone while driving. While driving the phone would get very hot, between the heavy use of GPS and the phone charging.

I’m trying to understand what has gone wrong and how it can be fixed. Do I just have a bad card, or is there a phone issue that is damaging the card? Is the card salvageable if re-formatted, or should I buy a new card? I'm not enjoying consistently losing valuable data to a fluky card/phone.

I have had similar issues with this same card in my Verizon HTC 10. The first card experienced unmounting issues after a couple weeks; I contacted Sandisk and they replaced the card after explaining what was happening and what remedies I tried. I used the replacement for a couple months now and I started having the same issues with the replacement. In between I am using and older 32 gig card (not Sandisk) and have yet to have any issues. I contacted HTC (via chat) and they said it might be the tray. They sent me a new tray but it does not resolve the issue with the Sandisk card. HTC confirmed the card is supposed to be compatible. I have contacted Sandisk again but have yet to hear back from them (about 2 days now, starting to think they are going to ignore me this time). If I don't hear back from Sandisk, I am going to try the Samsung 128 gb evo plus class 10 card. (got one for my wife's Galaxy S7 and haven't had any issues). BTW, each time I have set it up for external storage, not adaptable. Just thought I'd post in case anyone else was considering this card for their HTC 10.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I got that card for my 10. I've had an unlocked one for almost a month and a half now, and I just got the SD card missing error.

Have you had any trouble? Solutions? Is it htc?

In my experience with this issue, my first SanDisk card was set up as adoptable storage and it took a dive after a couple of months. The second card I bought (Silicon Power 32GB MicroSDHC UHS-1(U3)) has been set up as external storage and I have yet to see any issues. My assumption based on the complaints is that this is an issue with the phone, whether it's the tray, the contacts with the card, or the software reading the card, it can't be the card's fault as people are using many different card brands and the same issue occurs.

This is consistent with my reading: lots of different card makes/models having issues with unmounting. This especially the case with adaptable storage, but is also happening with external storage. My third, and last ditch effort, with my current card involved formatting the card via the adapter on my PC, rather than in the phone. If that doesn't work, I'll be complaining to HTC before buying a new card.
