SD Card Reading Speed Fix

Hey guys, I ran across this thread on XDA.

It has to do with speeding up write/read speeds of the SD cards.
I read through it and it seems simple enough, wondered if anyone knew any more about this.
I don't have any sort of tech background so I was hoping someone here could explain if this can/should be used on our Fascinates.
Maybe they can be incorporated into future ROMs if it proves useful?

I go into that file though and it says 128kb
Is that the biggest it can go?
The XDA OP mentions that's the default setting

EDIT: Ran the media scripts (fast_media). i think that's what you meant wyllic. Checked /sys/devices/vitual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb file and it still says 128kb.
So is it really included in current ROMs? Cuz the thread I linked to is from yesterday

Upon review this seems to give me a nice boost in write speeds as bizarre as it seems.

The fast media scan mod makes the media scanner skip the internal memory. It has nothing to do with the actual read process of the SD card.

Yes it's a good thing. Adrynalyne's said when he posted the fast media scan script that the media scan was scanning unnecessary files. The script eliminates the unnecessary scanning so it doesn't take as long. Find the thread where Adrynalyne posted the script, there is a warning about wiping while using the script erasing ringtones. It's an easy fix, but find the thread.

I don't use the script since I have no complaints about the speed of the media scan and I would forget about it while flashing stuff. The mod above did seem to pick up my scan speeds though. I think it's my new fave.

Made a difference here

I am running SC 2.9.2 with Adry Kernel and Nirtro Dark theme. My file system didn't have init.d, I added it and placed the script in there and now my read_ahead_kb is set at 2048 after a restart. My gallery loads much faster.

I've tested all 4 different scripts using SC 2.9.2 / Adry's UV Voodoo Kernel / NitroDark V3.0 This is with the stock Samsung SD card as well

Stock Read 4.8 mbps
Stock Write 13.8 mbps

1024 Read 5.9 mbps
1024 Write 14.2 mbps

2048 Read 4.8 mbps
2048 Write 14.3 mbps

3072 Read 4.6 mbps
3072 Write 14.4 mbps

4096 Read 4.1 mbps
4096 Write 13.8 mbps


Just a little info to wrap your brain around, I would expect everyone to get different numbers but this should provide a basis for comparison

@wyllic - Those are roughly the same numbers I got. Reading further down in the XDA thread it says that with the stock class 2 card nothing faster should be expected. The hack really only works with faster aftermarket cards.

I have been wanting to get a bigger card maybe now is the time to do it and test this out some more.

I saw positive results on a class 2 card if you read further. I think there's a hole in that benchmark somewhere. I'm using the 3072k mod currently and my gallery loads so much faster it's not even funny.

I agree. I ran the benchmark at least 5 times w each setting and didn't see much if a difference in numbers but noticed my gallery loaded REALLY fast

Yeah same, so the benchmark program apparently doesn't work properly. Because my gallery loads instantly every time. So it definitely works, we just can't benchmark it atm

Ya, there's some incompatibility either with the class 2 cards, or the fascinate itself.

I wouldn't call it epic. Except the stock card is samsung, and the phone is samsung LOL.

And yet the phone can't correctly figure out the read/write speeds of the SD card. Sounds like a couple people at samsung didn't talk to each other

I think the original thread says it's an Android thing, not a Samsung thing
