Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot Issue - SOLVED!

Many many thanks to OP Giskard and Adam K for the tip about rolling BACK the date one year, it worked like a charm! I was a little nervous about going that deeply into my phone but everything went very smoothly! I only had to do the whole process once; I think using App2SD and being diligent about clearing the cache and memory due to the low memory problem had already given me enough space. And as an added bonus: phone does seem zippier and I was able to finally update to Flash 11 without the low memory error popping up immediately!

After getting sick of seeing the update message and it not doing anything, I thought I would try this method but I can' get my phone to go into hboot. I tried powering down the phone several times and starting it back up holding the power and volume down but no luck. It doesn't do anything and when I let go, it boots up normally. Is there something else I need to do?

Thanks.

Just wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else.

My phone never got the 4.06 update that I am aware of, it was still on Android 2.2 when I started getting the notice for the 4.08 update (the one about 87MB in size) and it would download and get stuck at the rebooting screen(which Google lead me to find info about on this forum) I tried most of the things listed here to get the update to install, but every time it would get stuck at the rebooting screen.
I figured this was because I had rooted the phone using the info at unrevoked. One thing I never saw here was a way to download the actual update.

I broke down and stopped by the Verizon store to see if they could do anything. They eventually got me in touch with HTC tech support who provided the following instructions:
1. Download the HTC Sync app from HTC Mobile Phone Support - DROID INCREDIBLE by HTC (Verizon) - Downloads
2. Install it and make sure my phone can connect to my PC.(when you connect your phone you need to choose the option HTC Sync for the connection type when prompted on the phone)
3. Download the 4.08 update from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/14388758/RU...15.10.07.07_NV_1.70_release_222194_signed.exe
4. Run the downloaded file and just follow the wizard.

These steps worked for me and I now have Android 2.3.4 and software 4.08.605.2
*NOTE* This did wipe my phone and I lost all of the downloaded apps(not a big deal for me) BUT it did not delete my data(all of my pics and videos were still there, but I had already backed them up just in case)

Help! I did the steps and got to the red triangle with exclamation point. I held the up and down volume forever (it seemed) but it is stuck on this. I cannot get it to go to the clear cache part. Any help or did I just kill my phone.:(

None of these worked for me. This update has been trying to update on my phone but it never does. Really irritated.

We did the reboot and that allowed us to start the update however it did not perform that due to lack of space.
How much space is required and where is this space required?
All indications are that we have plenty of space.

Thanks

Thanks for all the help, this forum helped great with the same problem i see everyone else has.

Note: if you are trying to push for the update by changing date and it doesnt push for the update, do this: Change Date, make sure automatic date&time is turned off, then pull battery out while phone is on. Turn phone back on, and go to your about phone area and updates, it should be downloading then and ready to be installed.

hope this helps anyone with this issue.

Finally, I have Gingerbread on my phone! Good Lord, I was beginning to think about saying to Hell with it. But I had to move Soooo many apps and delete others, uninstall updates. But Finally, I got it. Big props to giskard for all the help that the maufacturer (HTC) and the carrier (Verizon) was ill equiped to handle! Thank you my friend.

Of course, this comes only 3 days before my upgrade kicks in. I will hang on to my Incredible until something catches my fancy. Although I am really liking that HTC Rezound. I will wait.

I don't have the low space problem, but I've used the method above and had the update install multiple times, but once it gets to the countdown on REBOOTING, it just hangs and goes no further. I've tried doing some of the steps in Airplane Mode, but once I take it out of AM and the download is complete, my Dinc hangs again. I've run out of solutions... Any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks to Giskard for the original fix (which has allowed me to actually reboot and attempt an install of this update) and thanks to others for the manual date/time fix (which has allowed me to reattempt a download of the update, time after time, when it fails). The problem I'm having is that I absolutely can't get it to install completely because of its ridiculous claims that I don't have sufficient space. Exactly how much @#$%@#$%@$# space is needed to install a lousy 87.7 MB update??? I've uninstalled just about every application on the phone and this is what my SD/phone storage currently shows:

SD card: total space 1.86 GB, available space 1.34 GB (72% free)
Internal phone storage: total space 6.46 GB, available space 6.17 GB (96% free)
Phone memory: total space 748 MB, available space 632 MB (84% free)

So HOW is that not sufficient free space?

Short of deleting all 600+ of my text messages individually or deleting all of my contacts, I really have no other idea how to free up more space. Anyone else have further suggestions on getting enough space to make this stupid update happy? This is enough to drive me up the wall.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I just know I've ALMOST got to the point where I can get past this and have a properly working phone again, without claims about application data storage being low every two days.

cheers,
Phil

The best thing I can tell you is keep clearing those apps that are a monster of space (NFL Mobile, Pulse...) and move the other ones to your SD Card. It's all about the phone memory. I had my available space to 510MB before the update took. I also uninstalled updates on Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader. That will help.

Holy smoke, it's finally finished. I had to uninstall updates for Flash, Facebook, clear data for Facebook (which is going to be fun re-entering all that stuff) and finally I had 688 MB free space in phone memory. I then recleared the cache, re-reset the phone date/time, and re-downloaded the update. It has finally, FINALLY, completed installing properly. With luck this will fix the "low memory in application data" crap I've been seeing for weeks.

Many, many thanks to everyone who contributed useful suggestions in this thread. I used nearly ALL of them to get this thing to finally finish.

cheers,
Phil

Nice fix...took several tweaks and tries to make this work. For one thing: the phone allowed me to set the date ahead a year but then immediately changed it to the correct date - even though the automatic update was not checked.
Also, due to some memory issues it took longer than I wanted to get it to work: and changing the time to one month and 1 day out seemed to work.
Had to change to a freshly charged battery, too, but it works now.
Interestingly enough: lost NONE of my data and apps..everything is still there and it works.
Very cool and thanks for the help!

It worked but only after making lots of space. Went through every app and moved to sd if possible, cleared caches and data. Still wouldn't work after changing date. Even after unchecked auto it kept changing the date back to current about 2-3 secs later. Took off back cover, went through the whole process, and then went back to date change, changed it and pulled the battery before it could change back. Next restart it installed the update successfully. Thank you so much for the great help. Not sure why you are not working for HTC or Verizon. They need brillant folks like yourself. Don't know if this solves the issue of phone space full when actually not. Hope so. -Rick
