I'm fed up with my S7. I have been since I bought the thing at release, and it's been going downhill since then.
Google Assistant (or whatever it was called before that - I don't remember now) was nowhere in the minds of the designers, and I (try to) use it religiously. No support for calling it awake without it being plugged in, and it's incredibly slow if it even ever starts to process audio. Voice commands for maps are also quite slow (though this is probably because of how slow the thing runs in general).
My golden image of an android phone (without any hands-on evidence that it would carry through) has been a Pixel - if Google made the phone, I know it's designed around Google Assistant and their app suite. The problem is the price at the moment. I wouldn't want to spend more than $500 for a phone, and they only have 4GB of memory (I am one of those users that DOES need as much RAM as possible - I've got lastpass, twighlight, Accubattery, and others (Facebook and whatever other apps) running in the background constantly, and I'd like to add others like Tasker and Greenify if there was enough RAM to support it, but that can't happen on the S7), so no way in hell I'd pay higher (considering this would be a phone I'd plan on using until at least 2022, 4GB would not be enough to maintain performance for me as apps increase in demand).
When researching a phone model, how would I determine if Google Assistant and their app suite is considered a centerpiece of design? (Instantly bringing it up, low energy CPU support for walking from sleep, etc. Just flawless performance for Google Assistant in general) I'm looking at getting an inexpensive (<$300) phone to get me through the next year or two when google hopefully releases an acceptably-specced phone for me to buy, but don't want another sour experience like this S7.
Also, are some phones more "compatible" (work smoother, or anything) with Android Wear or Android Auto? I'm planning on getting an Android Auto head unit and some kind of Android watch in the next year, primarily for use with Google Assistant (and google maps/google music).

Price is really the challenge with what you're describing.
