SG3 screen not as bright as Epic 4G?

I am still with the Epic 4G. I was so excited to upgrade to the GS3 but I wanted to see it before purchasing. I went into Sprint on Sunday (twice!) to check out the phone. I did not purchase. What really disappointed me was the lack of brightness in the screen. There was not only a large difference between the GS3 and EVO LTE but what really shocked me is that my 2 year old, EPIC 4G AMOLED, screen is significantly brighter. I did have the GS3 set to max brightness and disabled the display power saving. The most noticeable difference is with white backgrounds. With colors there wasn't a problem. I really like AMOLED screens but I didn't expect them to take a step backwards in brightness.

I really was looking to forward trading up. Do you think there is phone to phone variation? Could the brightness be increased by a ROM/software change?

Thanks

I think it is factory set to maintain reasonable battery life.

I could see them doing that with auto-brightness active but that wouldn't make sense on manual. I hope there is some way to at least match the brightness of the old AMOLED screens.

As soon as my wife gets home I will compare her S2 Epic with my S3. The S2 was mine up until last week and I'm pretty sure the S2 is no brighter. Let you know in a few minutes

I was worried about that too but was sold the second I started playing with the GS3 in the store. It's an awesome phone, and that's coming from a guy who had the EVO LTE for a few weeks.

I changed all the demos to full brightness in the store. I swear, some stores are oblivious to how to properly display a phone.

I have an Epic 4G now running on CM9 and I'm awaiting my SGS3. I keep my Epic at exactly 25% screen brightness so If my new SGS3 can match that brightness, I'll be like a fat kid eating cake!! :D

If you are good with 25% brightness on the Epic 4G than you will have no problem with the SGS3 on manual at a higher setting.

Ok, with both the S3 & the S2 at 100% and auto brightness turned off the S2 is a bit brighter. Looks like the S3 is about 10% less. I run my S3 at 50% wth auto off and I love it.

Thanks. At 50% can you see outdoors well?

I have the Epic 4G Touch now which of course is the Galaxy S II which uses the Super AMOLED Plus display and today I was in a Sprint store and checked out the Galaxy S III and in my opinion I think the screen on the Galaxy S III is much brighter than the Galaxy S II. I also had the T-Mobile Vibrant, their variant of the Galaxy S last year and compairing the screens, the GS3 is far superior but everyone's opinions varry

It isn't bad but I don't use it outdoors at all to speak of. I would probably bump it to 75% if i had to use it outdoors much.

Comparing my S2 to my S3 I feel like the S3 is brighter, but they have different screen protectors on them the S2 has a matte finish, and the S3 has the SGP ultra flex HD. Either way both screens work for me, I'm going to charge up my EVO, E3D, and original epic to see the differences. I kind of wish I still had my moment, hero, and optimus s laying around for s and giggles.

How long does your battery last running at full screen brightness??

It will die by the end of the day but I mostly work at the office with it plugged in. Also, I always keep a second battery (which is exactly why I didn't get the EVO 4G LTE).

How does the SGP ultra flex feel when you are sliding your finger on the screen?? Does it feel smooth like glass or slightly grippy due to the soft material its made out of??

Someone had mentioned custom ROMs, etc fixing the brightness and white color issues. The custom kernel devs get options to support Voodoo Control we can then tweak the colors and display to better suit our needs.

The Ultra flex is slightly grippy but not like the invisisheild. I like it so far, however it is super stretchy when you put it on. So be ready to have patience when putting it on to get everything set up evenly.

I install a variety of vinyl applications for a living so this is a walk in the park for me. Its the impatient people that usually have trouble doing it right, lol!

I also came from the epic 4g. I can assure you the S3 is every bit as bright. I keep my S3 at around 65% which is as bright as I ever wanted the epic to be. Auto setting is not bright enough but keeping it at 65 is fine for me.
