Should I get Nexus Protect?

I'll be purchasing the 64GB gold 6P on Thursday and I'm wondering if I should get Nexus Protect. I haven't had to get a replacement phone since 2009 under any insurance programs and the only reason I had to was because my BlackBerry Tour was destroyed in a car accident. I'm bummed that Nexus Protect doesn't cover loss or theft, too.

Did you purchase the insurance program on your Nexus?

I never purchase an insurance for my devices. A good case and a screen protector suffice but if the devices gets completely destroyed well then that is the risk I end up taking. Buying a gently used device for much less than retail is not a bad idea if that were to happen...

No, I never purchase any type of insurance/warranty.

Since 2009, I dropped two phones nothing serious where I wished I had protection. Besides, I never keep one for more than 6 months. :)

True. I'll only be hanging onto this phone until the next Nexus device comes out. Or until whatever phone catches my eye, whichever comes first.

I bought into it, but now I regret it. 2 words - deductible and refurbished.

Yeah. $89 for Protect + $79 for deductible and then you get a refurb. I don't think it's worth it.

I tend to buy it just for that peace of mind. I use my phone for work and like to be able to get a replacement ASAP. But, I used to be anti-insurance of any kind and went with the gently used replacement phone. At this point, I can see either option working, as I rarely even barely damage a phone. I also tend to sell my phones within 6 months or so, and it does help to have that as an added bonus to a future buyer. It does kind of suck that you can't buy Protect after the original purchase.

I say no but that's because I never buy insurance for phones. I've never had a situation where I wish I had it. I know some may say yeah that one time you do need it you'll wish you had it but I disagree. If I can go 5+ years without insurance and issue I think the one time I bust a phone it would actually be cheaper to fully replace on my own versus paying that insurance premium for all those years.. Or in the case of the protect that extra hunk of change to get the phone.

That's just me though. Some like the peace of mind. My gf has insurance on her iPhone 6S Plus.

I got it, felt like it was worth it ... homeowners/renters insurance have an option to list electronics separately (at least most policies do) so you wouldn't have to pay what would typically be a $500 deductible. Mine is $100 so even though it's not perfect and I wish Nexus Protect covered it, at least I know I won't have to drop $500 should it get stolen.

I've always sworn off insurance for phones for at least the last 12 years or so. Never had any issues. Even with confidence and cases for my phone, I decided to get it. It's so much cheaper than other carrier's insurance at 10 or 11$/month. So, for one price I get two years of protection. I looked at it as other carrier's price for two years as $240 vs. Nexus Protect for $89. For that price, the peace of mind was nice.

Refurbished? That sucks.

The insurance up here is $7 a month with a $250 deductible. I was told I can smash it into pieces and get a brand new replacement.

Do any of you use Square for protection plans?

I have used them for multiple items, usually tablets that I take to school and travel with. Unfortunately, I can't really say much because I have never made a claim.

As for Nexus Protect, after reading this thread, I've been snapped into reality and now regret buying it. I've never damaged a phone and I use minimal cases. I fell for it.

No, I didn't have to. If you pay your phone bill with a Wells Fargo credit card it's covered with the exception of loss.

Nexus Protect doesn't cover loss or theft. :(

From the Nexus Protect FAQ:
"Replacements are not available if:

You lost your device, it was stolen, or you don’t have it anymore.
Your device has been replaced twice for accidental damage already."

I was talking about renter's/homeowner's insurance, you can include electronics and most insurance companies only charge $100 deductible if lost or stolen. I know Nexus Protect doesn't cover it, that's why I brought that up!
