I did end up purchasing Nexus Protect for the 64GB gold Nexus 6P I just ordered. The thought of not having it made me uneasy after I thought about it for a while.
With a terrible repair-ability score I know if I happen to keep the 6P for two years I wanted to protection backed by google. It's one of those things... easy to say you don't need it until your device is broken and you're out of luck. I'd rather pay 79$ and have another working nexus in 72 hours then be wondering what do I do now or have to pay full price for another one.

Did you get a case or TGSP?
Pay me $7/month and $250 deductible and I'll replace your phone too, and make money at it! ;-)
Ugh. I saw that the screen is really difficult to fix and none of the cell phone screen repair places fixed the screen on the 6P. That affected my decision to purchase Nexus Protect.
The big bummer is that Huawei isn't even repairing these. If you don't have a protection policy you are screwed if you break the screen. This is one place where the iPhone shines over android. That's going to get more and more common... Long ago are the days where you can get by with someone repairing your screen for a decent price. First off, just the screen alone is going to run close to $200, and it's going to take a hours just to get the damn phone apart... nevermind getting it back together properly and in one piece.
I'll take Nexus Protect, yes. For a 128GB 6P, the surcharge is just under 14% of the purchase. And it's relatively cheap compared to traditional carrier insurance billed monthly. I set aside $79 in the household reserve budget, and I'm done.
If I need to use it, I get the handset replaced for a total cost of $169 or about one quarter of the purchase price (25.9%).
I also consider that there won't be many smoking hot deals on used handsets in the first few months after launch. I don't expect to see supply for the secondary market to rise until the next "it" phone comes out.
I also consider that I buy a handset expecting to keep it 2-3yrs, rather than buying a new ~$500 handset in the following 12-18 months.
The math works for me. I realize some folks say it's always a bad deal if you never file a claim (i.e. Break your phone). But that's how insurance works.
Good luck to all.
I ordered me a 64gb graphite 6P today and I got Protect with it. I know I won't keep it for two years but it gives me peace of mind and helps with resale.
I'm coming from a month long stint with Apple. And I like it, but I can sell all my Apple gear and still get a great phone and make a ton of money back.
