Signal issues?

My Droid Charge was -76, my SGS3 is -110, it's pretty bad downloading less than 1.5 mbps...........

That is completely opposite of other posts, so perhaps they all have bum Charges or you have a bum GS3 or a setting issue?

I tried again at home, got 30 mbps download, just as good as I have ever gotten on my Droid Charge. Maybe the reception at my home in Jersey City is less congested than the reception in downtown Manhattan? I've been able to get about 7-10 mbps at work before, today I couldn't get past 1.5 mbps.

You are comparing apples to oranges. Unless you are in diagnostic mode with the Charge and go to the LTE Monitor screen, the Charge is displaying the 3G signal, not 4G as the SGS3 is displaying. I have the Charge and can go in right now and display the signal strength at -79, then go into diagnostics and the LTE strength is -112. To get to diagnostics on the Charge you have to push *#0011# from the phone dialer screen. However, I think at one time I had to enter some other codes to enable that to work that I found in another post that I can't remember right now.

This is what some folks do not know and is causing misperception. LTE by its nature of signal will tend to show a much higher dBm value. GB and ICS is apples to anvils for 4g values.

The top test is at my house in Jersey City NJ, the rest are at my work on Wall Street in Downtown Manhattan. I swear all the stockbrokers are eating up all the 4G LTE bandwidth. I even walked to the middle of the Wall Street and Broad Street right outside the stock exchange (luckily it's all pedestrians) and could not get a good speedtest result.

HMM, looks like I may need to let Verizon know that their service where I work is sub-par....

Wow, that test at the top of the first image is a crazy outlier compared to the rest of the results at your house. I'd be interested to know what else was different about that test other than time of day.

As far as my experience, after 1.5 days of usage (and many comparative speed tests), the data signal on the S3 appears to be somewhere between the Nexus (which I had for 1 week before trading it in due to its horrible signal) and Rezound (which I still have as my backup). The S3 speed tests have been, on average, about 60% of what I was getting on the Rezound in the same places, but still "good enough." It also appears to bounce between 3G and 4G a lot more in fringe areas (i.e. my house and office) - the weird thing is that this usually happens only when I'm holding/handling the device. When I set it down, it holds 4G signal much more consistently. I wonder if antenna design is causing this behavior somehow... I'll play with it some more and see if I can pin down some definitive patterns.

So far it has passed test #1: maintaining steady 4G signal at the office (while sitting on the desk) to allow me to listen to streaming media. Tomorrow will be the next test: I have 5 hours of conference calls from home, and I'll be counting the dropped calls and taking note of the quality.

What is this and how did you get it? Is it an app or something?

Ugh, I'm having signal drops just like I did with my Samsung Stratosphere, what is it with Samsung radios?

Day 1 = flawless, this thing was flying

Day 2 = the problems arise

I've had some issues with my Nexus as well but the S3 issues are almost as bad as the Stratosphere, fortunately they do not occur often but I've noticed at least 3-4 episodes today where I have no data movement at all

Will keep a close eye on this (I realize this is not a prevalent problem, I could just be in a poor signal area, odd however that my Nexus is the best performing phone in terms of 4G signal...)

The top test is actually just one test. Every other test is near work

Anyone else with signal woes near the Philadelphia area?

Was in nyc last night with no issues, came down to philly for a business trip and the signal has been atrocious since

Had to use wifi just to log onto the forum...

I have been reading about signal issues for a week now and it made me very tentative to buy this phone. I got it this morning and it's great! Just as good as my iPhone or 4g iPad. My battery is concerning me though. But besides that this phone is great so far!

Hi, I started this post one week ago. Whining and complaining on the first day I had this phone because my wife's rezound was smoking it in the speed test and signal strength. The rezound has better Radio I must admit. I must also admit I have not dropped a call or lost signal at all. The S3 switches between 3 and 4g seamlessly.I work and live east of Pittsburgh, Pa. and 4g works almost everywhere except my living room where the rezound still gets 4g.
After a week of use I must give the S3 its just due. WOW this is an amazing device, battery lasts all day, its so fast, no lag anywhere. Have you seen Molly Wood on cnet do the stress test on the S3? its a must view for any S3 owner or soon to be owner, I cringed out loud. I also bought my daughter a white S3 and replaced her Iphone 4, she tells me everyday,"I love this phone". I installed nova launcher and swiftkey 3 on my 32gb blue S3 with a 32gb micro card. Touch wiz had to go and the stock keyboard blows. The blue is awesome, and I have a cruzerlite clear case on it. After a week this is where I am at and still so impressed with the S3.
and still learning it.

The signal was a huge problem for me. It went back and forth for no reason.

Phone went back and I am happily back with my 4S
