Signed Bootloader, are you still getting it?

A signed abd encrypted bootloader is an instant no buy for me, and as long as HTC is locking and encrypting they're bootloaders I won't be buying any more of they're products. My next phone will be the next Nexus phone.

You will be able to root the phone but good luck trying to run a custom ROM, not gonna happen. +1 for the Nexus S :)

Did you not read this piece. That is what the evo 3d is

An encrypted bootloader means that the HBOOT image is cryptographically signed as opposed to an unencrypted signature. The only way to reproduce the encryption is with a very specific key, which is held by the manufacturer. Without the key, a custom HBOOT image cannot be signed in a way that the bootloader will accept it. So... no Eng HBOOT means S-ON remains (aka NAND locked, aka bootloader remains locked). Which means you can't ever have write access to key partitions of the filesystem that a custom kernel/ROM requires: /boot (kernel) and /system (Android OS). Furthermore, with Motorola bootloaders, there's something called an eFuse that checks to see if you've modified the bootloader. Assuming you do get the Eng HBOOT flashed, the eFuse may still kick in because of some checksum mismatch. Its job is to prevent the phone from booting into the OS when it detects that the bootloader has been tampered with.

Being able or unable to install custom firmware has no impact on what phone I purchase. I don't mind doing it with an iPod touch or an old phone, but I'm not comfortable doing it on the subsidized device tied to my phone account. I've really had no reason to root my phone anyway, but I can understand some people not wanting to use the phone. What is frustrating is having no info. I feel like it's not going to live up to my expectations now lol.

The way I see it: More phones available on release which means I don't have to get up so early! :p

Personally this doesn't affect me too much since I actually like Sense (crazy, I know) and when I had an Evo all I did were minor theme tweaks. I can see how this has the potential to impact sales though, it seems like part of the driving force that kept sales of the Evo going for so long was the development community.

This definetly makes me think twice. I was 110% sure about the Evo 3D prior to this. Im actually doing the unthinkable and thinking about getting an SG2 even though i already pre-ordered the 3D.

I run the stock Rom on my EVO most of the time. The main thing I care about is root and S-OFF. Without S-OFF apps like my own Bloat Freezer are severely crippled. And with a signed bootloader, it is doubtful we will ever get S-OFF. Disappointed in HTC, I will be using my Radioshack gift card for an SGS2 most likely.

We know HTC isn't a crap company...I wonder if they will release a second ROM or something else that will allow people who want to root/flash other stuff to do it but will still lock down the default. Personally not a game changer for me as I kinda enjoyed EVO OG with sense and really like some of the enhancements to Sense 3.0. Still....have a device that you are free to do whatever with is enticing.

Nope dot com. After experiencing the Supersonic in all it's unlocked glory, I will not go to a locked phone. Samsung for me!

Toast has said he will be getting an EVO 3D...do we all really think this thing wont be cracked open and flush with ROM's, CM7, etc etc?

I'm not expert but I'd venture that the device is too popular for that to happen.
