In mt previous phones (OnePlus Nord, Samsung) there was a menu item "Silent Mode" that silenced phone rings and notification sounds and nothing else.

With me new phone, a Motorola G82, there is instead a "Do Not Disturb" button which does not only silence rings and notifications but also media sound.

The effect is that I cannot listen to music or podcasts unless I also allow the phone to ring loudly whenever it wants to.

Am I overlooking something?

Wait, you're saying that if you change to the Vibrate or Silent icon, you don't even see the visual notifications for calls and texts? That shouldn't happen ...
Not sure about these since I'm not a Moto user, but that may point you in the right direction. First I'd try long-pressing the Sound button in your status bar's quick settings (where you usually set Sound/Vibrate/Silent) and see if that has any, well, Silent option for notifications alone. If not, try doing the same but with the Do Not Disturb setting (or find it in the settings list); there should be a section to customize what is and what isn't allowed during DND (including media separately from calls/notifications).

When you press a Volume button, do you see a bell-shaped icon above the onscreen volume slider? If so, tap that, and then select either the vibrate icon or the silent icon (the bell with a line through it), and see if that works for you.

Thanks, that gave me a few options.
Ultimately it didn't work. Apart from the media sounds (which I could modify) it also supressed displays of incoming calls and SMS.
Turns out with this version of Android I have to lower the ring volume manually, there is no shortcut like "Silent Mode".
Apparently Google or Motorola assumed that people who want to see if calls or SMS came in but don't want to hear them coming in are too rare to warrant a quick settings any more. :(
