Simple Fast Root Method With Rooted 1.47.651.1 Stock ROM with NO ADBs...Check Here!

ok, I am just nervous about borking my phone. Thank you for all the help and patience. So all I need to do in order to flash a rom is put the zip file on my sd card and then open the recovery and let it install the files?

As far as I know, yes. It's that simple. I would read up on the ROM's before you install them. See what they are and if they break anything (Some didn't have camera or 4G) but other than that it's easy to do.

Congrats Jason, you are in the set position to start flashing roms! Yes you are RA's recovery. Generally, but like YourDogsDead stated ready the instruction for each rom first, alls you have to do is put the rom on the root of SD card and select recovery in HBOOT, then you go to the screen with green lettering and it will say flash zip from SD card and then you select which one, and let it do it's thing.

Just a word of advice I would get everything set up how you like on your current system and do a nandroid back up. This shouldn't take that long to get everything back, especially if you backed everything up via Titanium Back up. After this boot back into HBOOT and then Recovery and do a nandroid. You won't need Titanium Backup after doing this. When you restore everything will return as if you never did anything.

So, I got everything rooted and ready to rock. The question is, do I have to flash a custom ROM or am I good with just running what I got from Simple Root?

Thanks!

If you only did the first link...you should do the second link just to update your device. You'll have 1.17 after doing the first link...that was two updates ago. If you do the 2nd link you'll have a fully rooted 1.47 update. Which is the newest. I highly suggest you do this if you don't plan on flashing any other rom. I would actually update even if you are planning to flash another rom. In the second link you are just updating your phone manually, not using a custom recovery...just follow the instructions, done in 5 minutes.

Putting the phone in "charge only" mode is absolutely critical. I don't think that can be stressed enough.

I used the Simple Root method to root the phone yesterday. This morning I used the rooted 6/29 OTA method and without incident.

Once I got past the initial rooting, I'm already comfy with shells so I used ADB for the pushes required.

Great stuff :-)

Yeah, I just noticed the software version.

So is it necessary to install both files? Currently, I have Clockwork installed and I'm not sure I want to change that to Amon Ra.

Cool, thanks. I've got it all rooted and flashed. I just have to figure out how to use / verify su.

Also, what's the difference between this ROM and the deodexed stuff?

Thanks!

there are odex files as part of the android and app structure. de-odexed sounds just as it is. No odex files. I dont know how they do it, but that should be the gist of it. It should in theory allow for easier flashing of apps.

Ah, OK. So, basically, it's up to me whether I want to deal with the de-odexed which lets me just drop .apks into the apps folder to have them installed with the ROM? Very nice...

If you do the second link, it RA's will install with it, but it brings you up to date and then you can switch it back to Clockwork. The Dev likes to use RA for the ease of signing keys.

when HBOOT scans the PC36IMG.zip on my memory card i get:

Main Version is older!
Update Fail!

whats this all about?

Here's a few questions

1. Where did you get the PC36IMG.zip? From 2nd link of OP?
2. Are you sure you are rooted?
3. What version of HBOOT do you have. It's at the top of the white screen and it should be .76. If it is .79 you are not fully rooted.

The reasons why this would say this is:

*PC36IMG.zip is an older version than you have installed.

*You're not fully rooted and do not have the correct HBOOT.

My guess is that you are not fully rooted, because if you were you could install what ever image you wanted. (don't quote me on the installing whatever image you wanted part).

i tried the "simple root" process and got this

Tehman:

I got these errors when the phone wasn't set for charge only when USB was connected. Make sure this is the case.

Settings / Connect to PC

Set default to Charge Only.

The Ask Me option can be checked or unchecked... if checked you'll need to confirm the selection when it is attached.

Also make sure you have USB debugging on...

Settings / Applications / Development

USB debugging should be checked.

It should be smooth sailing from then on.

Glad we could help. I'd like to take credit, but I'm at the beginning of the Android learning curve.

But it's very familiar territory as I'm a longtime veteran of a number of *nix flavors.

It doesn't look like this is answered yet. So... assuming you have the android SDK I've been told this tells you what you want to know:

run adb shell and if the prompt is # you have root. If it's $ you don't. # is the traditional root prompt for *nix.

It'll look about like this:
adb shell
#

As an alternative, you can install one of the terminal emulators for android and get into the shell that way.

Once you're in the shell from the $ prompt type in su. You should get back a # prompt.

It'll look about like this:
$ su

#

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
