S-off means that you now have Super User ability (able to get access to every file and folder that htc or verizon doesn't want you to have access to)... Now, once you are successfully rooted, there is almost NO chance of brickin your phone unless you want to mess around with the radio's... if you are rooted and still stock, don't worry you are fine. you just have the ability to use root explorer app or any other Root only app in the market.... I cant imagine a phone of mine not being rooted, especially to get the bloatware crap off of it... thats just my opinion. I just unrooted my incredible and turned the s-on again so that I could sell it on ebay...

my final analysis, stay rooted and stock if your comfortable right now, since you are kinda new to all of this I would research and READ READ READ.... we all started from where you are at somepoint in time... but you are def in the right place for help... the Incredible forums are the best forums I have ever been a part of!!! :)

What s -off mean here is a thread from XDA read the first few post and you will understand

Update: seth typed faster then I did lol :p

s-off? what does that mean? - xda-developers

Being rooted doesnt mean your doomed to bricking your phone tho , the main thing to remember is just make a backup before you change anything , or flash another rom .
I think if you dont alter the radio its pretty hard to brick it beyond fixing it.I havent ever altered my radio but flashed many roms.

whats the easiest way to make another backup?

The only way to make another complete backup like "nandroid" style which is say a COMPLETE backup of the entire system is to be rooted.

There are apps that back up your SMS, your call log, your apps. Some of these require root to work but the only way I'm aware of (jump in here guys if I'm wrong) to make an entire system backup is through the nandroid backup which requires you to be rooted.

I would agree with the others...stay rooted if for no other reason than to rid yourself of the bloatware Verizon stuck on there. That was how I started as well. When I realized just how easy switching ROM's was and how even easier it is to go back to a backup if there was a problem, that was when the fun and the flashing started.

Stick with it, you'll be glad you did. And if your phone gets borked for someother reason (i.e. you drop it and the screen cracks or something) you can always unroot and go back to stock.

In ROM manager app select back up current ROM, just rename it something you will remember....

SetCPU is a tool for changing the CPU settings (capable of overclock and underclock) on a rooted Motorola Droid, Nexus One, G1, G2, Samsung Galaxy S, myTouch 4G, Motorola Xoom, or one of many other devices to improve performance or save battery.

SetCPU also allows you to set up profiles to change the CPU speed under certain conditions, such as when the phone is asleep or charging, when the battery level drops below a certain point, or when the phone's temperature is too high. See the screenshots for examples of how you might set up profiles.

SetCPU's wide feature set make it useful to beginners and enthusiasts alike. Accelerate your processor to unleash your phone's multitasking potential, or dial your CPU's speed down to save battery.

Have an HTC Sense device with a stock ROM or kernel? If you are having trouble getting your settings to "stick," press Menu > Disable Perflock. You still have to be rooted.

Galaxy S devices: conservative scaling is recommended (ondemand on the Nexus S). There are issues with Galaxy S kernels that may result in crashes if some other scaling governors are used, or if the sleep profile "max" value is set too low.

@WANDA - I completely agree with you

.... To make it even easier on you, There are complete walk-through videos on youtube on how to install a rom... perhaps seeing it done will help you more than just reading it.

Please don't take this the wrong way but if your not sure about flashing ROM's and making backup's/restoring backup's I would stay away from messing with the processor.

I agree completly. Get comfortable with rooting, flashing ROMS and making backup then you can mess with the CPU.

thanks guys what are the best root apps for me to get started?

Use Titanium Backup to back up your apps (but NOT your system data) so you can restore them after flashing a new ROM. Root Explorer is a great file explorer app, and you could always give ROM Manager a shot, though I prefer to flash my ROM's manually in recovery.

Root Explorer, Wireless tether, Shoot Me (for taking screen shots) and titanium backup for sure.... I have a thread on the main rooting, roms and hacks section on how to easily get the wireless tether from the market, it is currently "hidden" but its still there :) OH yeah, and ClockWorkMod too is a good root app, i use it ALOT

when there is a software update will i be able to get the update with root on my phone? or will i have to unroot to get the update if there is one in the future?

I really recommend you read this thread

And this thread

in their entirety.

You need to learn and understand the fundamentals before you go traipsing off into the wilderness.

First rule of Root ? DO NOT TAKE THE OTA?s! You will experience more pain then you need to. Wait for your ROM chef to update your ROM of choice with a rooted version or you can un-root using the instructions in the first link and wait for unrevoked to figure out how to root the new build.

how is barnicle wifi tether?
Never used Barnicle wireless tether, I only trust Wireless tether from the app market.... as do many other ROM developers that include it with their ROM...(im not a developer)... but you cant just go to the market and get it.. here is the link for it.... SELECT THE THIRD ONE DOWN 2.0.7 http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list

Also, just don't accept the update, if you need it, it will be available for us root users to flash a few days after the release, I know alot of people that still haven't accepted the most recent update and they are fine... it really only changed the radio in the phone... which is very easy for us to do on our own... just reject the update if it comes..... OR you can unroot and accept it BUT im sure the next update with make it somewhat harder for people to root... HTC is trying their hardest to keep us from rooting

OR WHAT PVILLE SAID ;)

Flashed this ROM (my first ROM adventure) the other day and I'm loving it. I did have a few questions. I know the file for the original HTC keyboard is on the OP for this ROM over on XDA and I was wondering do I just place the zip file on my SD card and flash like I would a ROM? Same question goes for a couple of themes, particularly the ones where you change the color of your battery and signal strength notification.

Thanks for the help. This forum has been great in easing my anxiety about flashing ROM's. :-)

If they are zip files then you are correct ...just flash them like you did the ROM. When I flash something like a theme or mod I prefer to do a data/cache wipe and a dalvik wipe NOT THE DATA/FACTORY RESET! Probably isn't necessary just for a mod but its just what I do.

When you do flash the new keyboard and stuff make sure you're doing as "install zip from SD" and "choose zip from SD" and not "install update from SD"

When you say you wipe "data/cache" do you just mean the cache partition? I see Dalvik under "Advanced" and I see an option for "wipe cache partition" but I don't see anything that says data/cache.

I think I might be getting hung up on the word "data"

Also, what does wiping the cache partition and Dalvik actually get rid of? Will I need to re-set up anything after doing this?

Thanks for the help Wanda.
