So this wireless charging "thing"...

At least having reversible USB ports has removed the need to try 3 times to plug in a cable, without glasses I couldn't even do so by sight.

Being able to just put your phone down without plugging anything in and pick it up without worrying about having to unplug it or tangling it is great. It is hard to see how this is not on everyone's must have list of features.

Every time you plug a USB cable in it puts stress on the connectors, this may break your device, and before anyone says how many insertions they are rated at, do you really want to see if your expensive device lives up to that expectation? I've had the USB port fail on a tomtom GPS as well as having connectivity problems on 2 previous phones.
I love how you reference three times.

Was your Tom Tom USB C? USB C has been pretty reliable as a connector. The only ports that ever failed on me were mini USB which was the 1st generation.
Micro USB has never failed on my devices and neither has USB C.

Reversible microusb connectors are a thing. Been using them for a couple of years now.

Reversible?
Yup. Which is why I wondered why the reversible feature of USB C was a big deal. My cable also has a reversible end on the USB A side.

Edit. Weirdly I apparently don't have permission to post pictures.

Also IMO USB heavily mitigates the frustrations of having to "fumble with the plug". It's reversible, even my cat can get that thing in there.

It's not the fact that it is reversible or easy to insert, it's the stress on the charging port. Now that may not be as big a factor in USB C charging ports, but for those of us on micro usb ports, it is worth it. I use both wired and my wireless charging pad. I prefer the pad, but don't always have access to it.

Yes but since every smartphone worth a darn since the 6P has been USB C, micro USB really isn't a consideration, it it?

I have an S8+ and love the wireless charging that was a big selling point..especially if using it heavily...I've started making a plastic prototype holder for the charger and the phone that will hold them simultaneously so when I use a mouse and keyboard for long email replies or heavy YouTube use the battery doesn't drain as fast.

When it comes down to it, it still all boils down to what's important to you. I had cordless charging early on and swore I wouldn't buy another phone without it. I proved myself wrong and my chargers sat around collecting dust till my daughter got an iPhone X. I don't like cordless charging because most phones that have it insist on glass backs. I'd rather have a phone that's less fragile than go wireless. As it is I don't like that the Pixel is part glass but I'll live with it. If Google were to make a ceramic or polycarbonate phone than I might be interested in cordless charging. I still prefer corded fast charging but if can have both that's OK. For those of you who wonder why I call it cordless and not wireless it is because I don't consider the current method wireless. That's just me.

The first thing that comes in my mind when I hear of wireless charging is protection. Such a feature will protect our device's port from the constant in/out of the USB cable and since our phones need charging daily, such a use could potentially harm the port.
Personally I've solved the problem by using a magnetic cable and a small adapter plugged in my port, very convenient, even though the magnetic plug sticks out a little. So, I do not feel I need magnetic charging anymore. But I believe it will be a very useful feature in the coming years, IF such a charging pad will be present everywhere, furniture, cars, shops. If this happens, it will be great. Just one request, no fragmentation, please!

My port doesn't need protection. I haven't had a port go bad since the LG Voyager.

?? How else will the charging pad get its power? There's no cord/wires to plug into your phone, therefore....wireless... or cordless. Otherwise it's just a play on which word you use.

I'm just wondering what the difference between a cord and wire is in this scenario. Lol.

Not a play on words. Todays wireless charging is really inductive charging. An example of true wireless charging would be electricity transmitted across a distance so I could charge a phone in my pocket with the transmitter somewhere in the room with me. What I'm talking about is right around the corner.

I think that's the way I see it as well. Being able to charge OTA while in a defined space, small house or office or whatever. Though I'm anxious about safety of that type of system, that is closer to the definition of wireless to me.

It will great to be able to passively charge your phone or other device without even thinking about it.
