SoCal Radio Interface issues

I got the message for the first time yesterday. Noticed a few peculiarities just before it did...

I had Wifi on for at least 24 hours...

Most of the time when I had Wifi on, towards the end just before I experienced the error message, the signal bars for CDMA/EVDO service was completely missing, but not indicating no signal (with an "X").

Error occured shortly after I disabled Wifi to make sure a picture message attachment would go through since it was NOT switching from Wifi Mode to 3G mode with arrows for an indicator.

Occasionally, when switching back to wifi, the Wifi icon also shows no signal... just a dot... despite being less than 10 feet away from the router.

Based on what people have said and what I've seen... this error seems to fundamentally be caused by poor signal conditions that the device can't recover from (Interference or just an outage) or cannot tell if it has recovered from...

I'm wondering if something automated, like using Tasker to automatically toggle Airplane Mode every hour, would help to work around the issue.

After getting the error, toggling airplane mode gave me back normal signal indications along the lines of what I expect from past experiences in my apartment.

I returned my 3d and went back to my Optimus V. The error was too frequent for me. It really scared me to think it was defective and I would be stuck with it after 30 days. Kinda feel like I betrayed my V, feels good to be back.

Yeah I got an email letting me know that the issue was getting escalated to an investigation team as well. It's still happening but not as often as it did. And signal strength doesn't seem to matter, as well as whether I am on WiFi/3G/4G I like the Evo so I am not switching back to the Optimus V or swapping for a VM branded phone! LOL!

My original Evo V developed an issue with the power button so I went to Radio Shack and exchanged it for a new one. I activated this one myself, no problems at all and sure enough about a couple hours after the radio interference error started happening again. I finally got a VM tech to tell me that this is a known issue with the Evo and VM's network. After another round of troubleshooting and Fixes the error still persists. I came to the conclusion that if this is a network issue, there is no fix you can do on your phone to make it work right, the fix has to somehow be done by VM's network. In the last 4 years or so being with VM I have only seen them upgrade one phone's software (Intercept) so us unlucky ones may not have a fix to this issue. I will probably keep my Evo for another day or two just to see what happens after my full two weeks of ownership and then return if the problem doesn't at least become less common. I know we pay for what we get but for spending $300 on a phone we should at least have something reliable.

Today I may have had a variation on this issue... but without the popup message indicating a radio resource issue.

At this point, I'm fairly convinced it's a radio interference issue between Wifi and Cellular.

Today went going out to pick up some paperwork, I forgot to switch off Wifi before I left my apartment. Since I'm in Chicago, this means the L tracks, stations that tend to have dead zones within them and tons of interference spewing out of the third rail. Oh, metal train cars, too. It's fairly common to hit dropouts when riding the L.

Got on the train, got off, got paperwork, got back on, got off, walked out of the station and tried to look up something on the phone when I noticed I had a big fat "X" on my signal bars in a location that is usually full bars signal strength. I disable Wifi and the X remains.

So I toggle airplane mode. And it takes forever to switch to it. What it does while switching to airplane mode is... get full signal, get 3G, transfer data, switch from full signal back to an "X" over empty bars, switch back to full signal... all before finally showing me the airplane icon. I then disable airplane mode hoping to get full bars again. Nope. Just switches to the "X"...

I reboot the phone and finally have normal signal bars for the areas I'm familiar with.

I'm going to try leaving my phone only on 3G mode (no Wifi or WiMax) for a week and see if this issue ever duplicates.

I haven't heard back from them yet but my issues don't seem to be happening as much as they use. I can go a whole day not without seeing the dreaded message. Every now and then it still pops up so it's getting better.

Between what I've been seeing here, on Howard and on the VM Facebook Wall... I'm starting to think the errors we're seeing here are the phone being excessively chatty about normal outages. When we'd just see a
icon4.gif
on a text message with any other phone... the EVO just decides to spam us with the Radio Interface Resource Shortage prompt instead.

FYI - It looks as though VM released a new PRL version (61009; it was 61008). I just updated and at this point so far it seems as though the signal jumping problems seems to be far less now. Haven't tested out whether the radio interference error is any better yet, but I just wanted to let you all know of the update.

I've also been monitoring patterns on the VM Facebook wall.

Almost always: Whenever somone complains about the Radio Interface Shortage message... they also have an outage in their area.

This message looks to be exactly what I said before: The EVO's version of the

icon on text messages that failed to send on other phones.

So unfortunately this means we can only wait for the tower issues to be resolved for those who are having this issue especially bad.

In short: Radio Interface Shortage = "You're experiencing a service outage of some sort."

Had gotten the error message for a few days until today that I was texting my buddy. I am updating the PRL and account to see if that fixes it.

It's still hit or miss on my end even after I updated the phone on my end...they need to get this fixed because it's en annoying.
