When plugged into the car mount, the phone charges so slowly, it even discharges (when i use GPS for example)

I currently am using some crappy ATT microUSB charger that i bet gives out under 500mA

Would I be correct to assume that this Motorola high capacity car charger that gives out 4.75-5.25V @ 950mA would charge my device quicker; or in this case at least hold the current charge when im using the GPS?

Amazon.com: Motorola Vehicle Power Adapter micro-USB Rapid Rate Charger: Cell Phones & Accessories

Thanks

I've read that car chargers should be rated at least 950-1000 mA if you actually want to charge your phone while in the car. I imagine if you shut the phone down, a 500 mA charger will work, but if the phone is on, needs more juice.

that charger you linked to will likely work, I would just verify that voltage range is acceptable.

I have the Motorola in your link. It charges my phone very quickly (I don't use my TB for navigation). Others have reported the Motorola charger allows use of nav.

I think it will allow you to use nav.

I'm definitely thinking of getting this - but I also have the Verizon charger that came with my Droid OG car dock - I recently used it with the Thunderbolt on a long drive using navigation for several hours & the battery did not deplete. I can't remember how much it actually charged up, but it did not deplete.

USB voltage is somewhat standard, I believe. Either way, the charger in the link will solve your problem. The TBolt will self adjust the charging level up to 1 amp (1000mA). Anything below about 750mA is going to be a problem.

Good Luck

I have the Moto charger in the link you provided and find that it DOES charge even when using GPS. The charger is fantastic and charges faster than my home charger.

I have a 1A charger and I went from 94% to 86% while using navigation and listening to a book on tape for about 20 Minutes.

+1 for the Moto charger. It is the best charger that I have ever used, and it makes a huge difference. There is a thread here explaining why it charges better, something about the amperage differences between outlet charging (1 Amp) and USB charging.

The Moto charger works great, is super cheap, and looks awesome in my car. It glows blue!

I ordered that Moto charger because it is supposed to be good. I have the Verizon one now and it seems really weak to me.

I have the Verizon one which glows red but I must admit a blue glow would be nice as my interior lights are blue. :)

How cool would a blue light look with this?

The data pins probably aren't shorted, meaning the phone will pull only 500ma which isn't enough to charge and use navigation at the same time.

Go to Settings, About Phone, battery. Look at the battery status. Charging (AC) means it is able to pull more than 500ma. If it says Charging (USB), you need to either modify your power adapter (which is risky and may even be unsafe) or buy a new one that is designed properly. The real Motorola adapter seems to be the best choice.
