Some of my app icons have turned into little "blue gear" icons...anyone know how to fix ?

See attached photo... sorry for the poor quality of the picture.

My apps are up to date, but some of them showing some kind of default icon.

Maybe I will try uninstalling, then reinstalling the app.

This happens to shortcuts after a reboot or power off/on cycle. You just have to delete the shortcut (not the app), and re-add the shortcut to the screen. Annoying, but harmless.

Correction: The shortcuts that turn into the blue gear after rebooting are for apps that are on the SD card, rather than in internal memory.

THANKS, B. Diddy - great catch. I think you may be onto something. I gradually noticed this issue started when I tried to move apps over to the SD card.

Can I ask.....where are you storing your apps ?? .... are you just letting the apps get stored on the device in the way they are initially downloaded from the play store ?

Is "Internal Memory" the best place to keep our apps. stored ?

I have to say, it is a little confusing on the Maxx, with the different terminology used regarding storage, on the device itself. I see storage referred to in several different ways.

If I go to Settings > Storage, I see :

1. application storage
2. Internal media area storage
3. SD Card

Then, I can go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and can move apps between "move to media area" and "move to phone."

For my music and pictures, I will keep them on the SD Card, but for everything else, where do you think the best place to store apps is ?

What the difference between "media area storage," "phone storage," and "internal memory storage" ?

I believe the internal storage is partioned with so much space dedicated to each apps, media, and windows sinc storage. The windows sync partion can be redirected to the sd card, but so far it does not appear to free up space doing so. From what i can tell, this is why you have set amounts of storage for apps and media regardless of what the overall free space is. Hope this helps.

The Maxx has 3 GB of dedicated app storage, which is huge compared to my old Droid Incredible, so I store all my apps there. There's been little danger of running out of room. The only other place you can store apps is the internal SD card, also known as the Media area. This is the 8 GB partition of the advertised 16 GB of memory that we can actually use (the other 8 GB is used by the system). I believe apps stored in the Media area may run a tad slower.

The physical SD card, also known as the external SD card, can't be used for app storage. I would use that for photo and video storage. You can also set your camera to save there.

B. DIDDY - thank you for the awesome explanation !

Ok, so you are storing your apps in the 3GB of dedicated app storage ( I can see this in my settings). I have used only 416MB.

One last question....any idea how I can get apps that I have moved to internal SD Card...and hence the problem with the "gear icons," back into the "dedicated app storage ??"

When I open an app, the only option I see is to either "move to media area" or "move to phone."

Also, are most apps stored in "dedicated app storage" by default when downloaded from the pay store ?

Thanks again and if you don't know the answer to the question about moving apps into dedicated app storage.... I can just reinstall them.

thanks again !!

Glad I could help. "Move to phone" means moving to the 3 GB of app storage.

Most apps download to the dedicated app storage, but some big programs will default to the media area.

Awesome, I will move them. Yours was the first explanation of all of the storage capabilities that I could understand.

I, too, came from the DINC.... another great phone !

Thank again !

One more thing: If you are using Launcher Pro, the icons for apps stored on the SD card will turn into blue gears when the phone is restarted. All you have to do is go into the preferences for Launcher Pro and restart it. The apps will return to their normal icons.

Hope this helps.
