speed dial option ?

Pretty useless other than that, I cut it loose...maybe I should relook.

Using Direct Dial is Speed Dial for a touchscreen? How much "speedier" can you get than tapping a icon??

grab the app called speed dial. As you type in letters it gives you a list of contacts that match the letters you input. You can select the contact right from that list and dial it. For instance...if I want to call my wife...I type 9433 (corresponding to WIFE) and it brings up her contact info and I can call her.
I know it's not exactly what the OP was talking about, but I find it works great for me.

I'll look for this app.

I work in a hospital with many numbers, and pages, all with the same 6 front numbers. like, (AAA) BBB-4305. On the older Palm Treo phones, I could be
on phone keypad and type "4305" and hit Dial. It will auto dial the whole
number. If there are multiple entries in my Phonebook ending in 4305, I'll
get a pop-up selection screen for me to choose.

Is there anything like this for the DROID? PLEASE?

I can use bettercut, but then I'd have several dozen icons that I need to visually scan to find the number I want or just got paged to.. and if it's not there, I still have to manually type (or speak) all 7 numbers. Ugh...

Try Takephone...not updated for 2.0 yet, so it forcecloses at times, but otherwise a great program. I used in on my Centro and love it here, too.

Is there a way to do the lookup Blackberry style? When you did a lookup on a BB you could type the first two letters of the first name, space, first few letters of the last name and the lookup would narrow down quickly. I think on the Droid I have to type the complete first or last name before the space and it takes a little longer

Agree! Not entirely unexpected, I knew BB would kick Droid-ass in email functionality, security, etc.. but it seems like there are great features of GMail that I was expecting to be seamlessly incorporated into Android.

I've set homescreen shortcuts to those I communicate with the most. For everyone else, the search button does wonders :)
