Samsung Epic:3G Upload Capped?

Exact Text is as follows:

So, back on topic. I felt it was relevant to bring up another issue I noticed today. I was never able to use Skyfire via 3G or 4G for video, as well as having issues with streaming radio applications. I feel it is relevant to bring this up because I believe it increases the probability that this is an INTENTIONAL cap, as I have found a solution to our traffic being FILTERED:

(My own post from XDA)

So apparently sprint thinks this is the iphone and we want our traffic filtered and/or proxied. This causes skyfire not to work with its flash video feature (and possibly other video/streaming apps, like a radio app I tried). But you can fix it and here's how (credit goes to sdx thread for the moment, will try and post link when back at pc):

##3282#
Multimedia
Input your msl (find it using adb command getprop, look for msl in readout)
Change rtsp proxy to 0.0.0.0 and rtsp proxy port to 0

Enjoy your unfiltered traffic!

I felt it was relevant to bring this issue to light so people realize that giving sprint the benefit of the doubt is sometimes not warranted. They're intentionally limiting traffic at the phone level. Not something that inspires any kind of "good faith" relationship with them... C'mon sprint, this isn't the iPhone, and if you start giving it the same limitations, I might as well go over to AT&T with all their issues...

Some folks think that this was more of a test setting than not in some of the posts I read, as some phones apparently do not have this setting. I got mine on release day and it had it, but others say they have those settings zeroed out.

i felt totally abandon with my last samsung phone. thats why I will no longer purchase them...... My gf has the epic she wanted a slider keyboard. The last update killed the battery and before the update the epic would spank my evo on speed test via wifi or 3g.....

The ~150 cap itself is not present on the test devices. so people working in Samsung PR companies who have the returns from the initial reviewers have full speed without the download cap. The gizmodo editor had 3g rev.a uploads of up to 700 speeds. So the multimedia setting maybe different as well

I'm new and I don't even have my phone rooted yet, but I went ahead and downloaded the SDK and messed around with some adb commands. What I was wondering about though was this...

Input your msl (find it using adb command getprop, look for msl in readout)
Change rtsp proxy to 0.0.0.0 and rtsp proxy port to 0

Where do I input my MSL (which I was able to find) and after that how do I go about changing the rtsp proxy in the terminal?

Thanks in advance guys.

well the evo dose not have an 3g cap because mine work just fine that sucks for epic owners

Can't say I have any streaming issues. Can't speak to other radio apps, but I use Radio Time and it works just fine. Every stream seems to work. Slacker and pandora work without issue. My epic does suffer from the upload cap, so I'm looking forward to the fix for that.

I changed it after dialing ##3282# on the phone and selecting Multimedia.

Old value was rtsp.vog.sprintpcs.com port 554.

I agree, no change to 3G upload speed.

Thanks a lot. After you told me I had to dial the numbers on my phone it worked like magic.

Thanks again.

well I can't say that I am surprised because I have been saying that there is a cap on the youtube player. No matter how good of coverage I have, I will still not be able to watch a full youtube video without constant buffering and stuttering. If I try it on low quality, sometimes it will go all the way through. This is by design and it's sprint that is doing it. Sprint is not ready for all this traffic and will soon go to tiered pricing for data. This is the first sign.

Also pandora and slacker are not using anywhere near the amount of data that youtube or uploading vids or video calls would take.

Hey uh, not to sound like a total !@#%, but would you mind at least editing that first post to mention my name (that's my post). I mean, I DO appreciate people being made aware of this issue, but if you're going to copy and paste my entire post word for word without adding to it, the LEAST you could do is post that "This was originally posted by Compuw22c"

I gave credit to those who discovered this for the moment and I would appreciate the same credit. Also, I hope everyone here enjoys their streaming media. Thanks

Can anyone explain to me how to get the MSL?

Download ConnectBot from the AppStore (connectbot - Project Hosting on Google Code).

Launch, navigate the quick tutorial, and select local from the dropdown (ssh is set by default).

Type in a name (doesn't matter - it's just to save the session - I used localhost) and press Enter.

You should now see a black box with a $. Type in:

Code:
getprop ril.MSL

and press Enter again.

The number that appears is your MSL.

Then type: exit

to close the session before you leave the app.
