Sprint Samsung Epic 4g Official Froyo EC05 [update.zip method/Custom Odin Packages]

Update

Followed the directions EB13 to D18 to EC05. That was easy... Sorry I wasted my time at the Sprint Store! Read the directions 3 times.... Fast and easy!

I did it the same way and it works great. Now I'm getting ready to update my wifes phone.

I would recommend you all quit talking to Sprint. They are a waste of time, they will tell you nothing more than what they were provided at the start of the update. They are given a formatted sheet with some most common questions and provide what Sprint feels is the best answer. Thats it, unfortunately that is what it really is folks. You can ask them things to your blue in the face and no matter what they do or don't know they will only tell you what Sprint told them to tell you.

I've seen examples of this here and there on the blog posts in the past from different carriers. Its a method they use to make things cut and dry for their techs and reps.

Why? This saves them from being caught up in a situation where a rep or tech answers something that can be used against them by the device owner. If a rep/tech sticks to the "formatted" Q & A list then there is no worries.

Should I use Odin v1.0 to flash back to Di18 since the debug en feature is on that one and not Odin v1.6??? or is v1.6 ok to use without the debug en feature?? Any help now would be much appreciated!

I used 1.6 and the only options that are checked on mine are Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time and everything worked just fine to go back to DI18.

I just upgraded via Odin with the "no data loss" version and I just realize that it seems the upgrade deleted my Asphalt5 Demo.

Wouldn't that stop me from getting future OTA updates because of a missing Srpint bloatware? Anyways, how do I get it back? I hate to use my nandroid backup from cwm v2.5.1.0 prior to the upgrade and revert back to EB13 - other than that EC05 seems to work fairly well - it seems a little smoother in the app draw scrolling (I use LP) and I am able to lock onto a hard spot in my house to test GPS and that also seems to work better, but I just could be lucky that a few satalites (sp) were around.

I kind of liked the Asphalt5 Demo. Can I just installed the .apk? That would be even nicer as it was left out of the rom, so in the future if I wanted to get rid of it I could.

Oh it seems I have a tiny amount of more system memory, where before it was maxed before, maybe that came from the missing Asphalt5? - I can't remember if it was maxed out when it was new out of the box as it has been a while.

So far so good - BTW right after I finished my safety backup before I did the upgrade - Sprint sent me something on the Sprint ID upgrade - whether or not I would have gotten the OTA upgrade tonight or not I don't know - at least I don't have to worry about it anymore. :D

Thanks!

Yes I can provide you with a flashable zip to bing back the asphault5

That would be cool, because even if it doesn't stop you from future upgrades, I am sure there may be others here that would like it back for whatever reason also.

If you provide the flashable zip, do I use cmw to install the zip or unzip it and copy the apk to the system/app directory with root explorer?

So will you be providing a link? As a fyi, I gained 2mb of system memory after my EC05 upgrade - maybe this is where Asphalt 5 sat in memory?

Thanks again!

The link I send you will be to a flashable link.. You will just flash it in CWM. It will take care of things for you. I'll try and get it up in a little bit, mobile right now..

Yes that could be where you gained some extra memory.

Update:

Asphault 5 Demo (Flash in CWM)

Just got my OTA update and everything seems to be kosher. One thing, though, after the phone ireboote, I saw some message come up with something to the effect of software update. Because I was clicking something else at the time, I inadvertantly cancelled the update. Does anyone know what that was?

It was just checking to make sure all software was up to date. No big deal.

Thank you for the quick (and helpful) response. Is there anyway to bring that update prompt back?

No update for me!

I'm on stock EB13 (manual update). Never rooted. No signs of any updates jet. Just the text messages from Sprint promoting "Sprint ID" coming soon.

Does anyone know how long I should wait before giving up?

Everything seems to be working on EB13 right now but the phone is a lot slower and have a lot more occasional force close issues than on 2.1 DI18.

I was hoping to get OTA and see if those issues (faster performance and stability) got fixed through the official OTA update to EC05.

If I don't get anything by Monday, I'll just find the update.zip file and update manually again, hopefully with better results!

My spouse needs some help

My spouse has an Epic and people told her she should be running Android OS 2.2. I checked it for her and she is running 2.1. Does she need to talk to Sprint or are they just wrong? The two that told her this have Epics running 2.2

Thanks for any advice or input....

Still on bone stock DI18. Will not panic as I was told network problems have slowed down the ota push.
