Sprint Samsung Epic 4g Official Froyo EC05 [update.zip method/Custom Odin Packages]

before i could go a whole day and text and it would still be at like 40 or 50 % by the end of the day and i send out alot of text. prolly at least 2 or more hundred a day. maybe 30% the least.

Sorry, I didn't wade thru all the prior threads, so please state in comparison the percentages in your reply - if you do what you do and at the end of the day you have 40 to 50% battery left what percentage do you have now in comparison - please list together in your reply - there are a lot of people that post in this same very thread and it makes it difficult when your replies are scattered about

I caved and did a factory reset. That seems to have fixed things. But oh brother, getting things back to the way I had them... UGH!

Scratch that. I spoke too soon.

Hard reset fixed the ringtone/notification problem I was having.

But other problems I was having in DI18 with random crashes, locking up, not receiving text messages... Well those problems haven't gone away and in some cases are worse than before. Plus new problems. And that's with hard reset and minimal third party apps.

I'm eagerly awaiting the next non-Samsung android phone with a keyboard. This phone is hopelessly hopeless.

This phone is hopelessly hopeless.

Not so true if your willing to root and install custom ROMs.

EC05 currently doesn't have much options because its so new but those who are still rooted and running EB13 have so many to choose from. Honestly I don't have any issues except for the occasional blue tooth bug here and there and a random one and a great while FC while runnning the many custom ROMs on EB13.

I will agree with you to a point, Sammy and Sprint can't seem to get a solid working stock OS but the devs have seen threw these issues and worked up some incredible custom ROMs that have virtually eliminated any and all problems people are having running stock.

Just my 2 cents...

if i let my phone go yesterday it would have gone dead. i had to charge it in the middle of the day. My sister had her update and it was OTA and her phone was at 62% when she went into work and 3 hours after she started her battery was at 18%. by the time she was done work 2hours later it was at 1% when i picked her up. she texted me two times the whole 5 hours she was in at work and thats all she did with her phone.

I think I posted something to you about your lockups before. DI18 is among the most stable phone OS that I have seen. I was having the same issues (EXACTLY) as you are having and thought froyo would fix it. Like you I blamed the OS. I couldn't wait for froyo to come out so my phone would be stable. In early December I was told the same thing I'm telling you. It's a hardware issue not a software issue. But I resisted. That's until my daughter got an epic for Christmas. After seeing none of those issues with her phone, I returned my phone to sprint. My phone has been perfect since then with both Eclair and now with Froyo.

You need to take your phone to sprint and tell them the issues you are having and make sure you tell them it was on eclair as well as froyo and that you have already completed several factory restores. Tell them you want a replacement phone. You will be glad you did. I called them on the phone and within 15 minutes had another epic on the way. It made it to my house in 3 days. Don't forget to remove your sdcard as the replacement phone doesn't come with one.

Now that a lot of people have gotten the Froyo upgrade, what do you think? How about some reviews on functionality of the new features, speed, etc?

Yes, I remember your response well.

I'm going to try to get to a Sprint store today and see if I can get a new unit. I was really hopeful that froyo wold eliminate these problems but I have the same headaches and more now. I hope that a new unit eliminates these problems once and for all.

Speaking of the SD card, if I copy my apps to the SD card from my current phone can I transfer them to the new phone from the SD and keep all my settings, data, etc.? Or do I have to reinstall?

I might be willing to go down this road if there was one ROM and that ROM was the ****.

But that's not the case there are bunch of ROMs. And as I understand it each one has its pros and cons. And I've read more than one person say that they've used many ROMs and none of them were perfect.

I feel like no matter what it's going to be a compromise. Once I go down the road of changing ROMs now I've got to try different ROMs. And back up/restore my data every time I switch. Then go through a testing & analysis period every time to see which one I like. Split hairs over which one to keep, etc. I feel like it's going to be an ongoing project.

I'm very OCD and if I open this Pandora's box I'm going to obsess over it and waste too much time on it. Just to make my phone do what I expect it to do out of the box.

At this point I don't care about extra features, cool hacks, battery saving techniques, etc. All I want is for my phone to be stable. I can live with it crashing/locking up once every few days. Not a few times a day. And losing text messages that are sent when the phone is locked up is completely unacceptable. I've never had this happen with any phone. Ususally when you reset your phone it picks up all the text messages. But my Epic doesn't. Not even with near-virgin Froyo.

I've only been running the update for about 3 days, but I think that it runs much better than EB13.

As for battery, I thought that my battery life suffered when i transferred from ECLAIR DI18 to FROYO EB13 but it seems a little better since updating to FROYO EC05

Now that you can move apps to the sd card perhaps you can. Even if you have to reload the app perhaps the settings and saved games will be retained. I can't say for sure but it's worth a try. Let me know if it works.

I think my troubles may be hardware related so I called Sprint today and they insisted I take my phone in to the store first. I told them I've already hard reset it and that didn't help. They said they can do "more" than a simple hard reset.

I don't think that's true but it got me thinking... If I run update.zip or reflash the phone, is that a step above doing a hard reset? Any possibility that will fix things that a hard reset did not fix?

I took mine to the store first so they may seen that in my records when I called. Yeah the store will also clear your cache. That's what they said they did to fix mine. Consider it a needed step to getting a new phone. The 1st time it happens after taking it in, call them up and demand a new phone and give them a hard time about them wasting your time.

I would actually rather not get a new handset because I have a skin I like on my phone that is discontinued. But of course working phone > skin.

I'm still wondering if flashing the phone might possibly fix issues that weren't fixed by doing hard reset from EC05

Does that make any sense at all? Or is a hard reset the same as reflashing EC05?

My opinion is to try and stay away from dealing with Sprint. I've seen their people in action and its a joke. The last time I was there I helped more people standing in line with "real" solutions instead of the usual "we will just to a factory reset/wipe and reinstall your OS" as their answer to everything.

Don't get me wrong their techs yes they know how to rip apart a device and put it back together with their eyes closed but when it comes down to really resolving the problem with software related issues which 99% of the time is the root of the problem they just don't know anything.

Besides, my opinion of these refurbs which is what you would end up with is a "pot luck". Some people get great phones, other have had replacements with problems and had to go back for another replacement. So until you completely prove 100% its a hardware related issue, keep your phone.. Its yours, nobody else previously touched it... It hasn't been rebuilt or simply "wiped clean" and a fresh faceplate/keyboard thrown on it..

What skin do you use? I use body guardz. You apply it like a window tint but it is thicker and stronger than tint and it covers the entire phone and if it is done right can't be seen on your phone.

Or you can just keep your original backshell.

I really feel your issues are completely hardware related. But trying other options won't hurt any. But IMO, they will just delay you from getting a working phone. 3 flashes did nothing for my phone. I believe flashing is when you reinstall the OS from the boot recovery menu and is what I was talking about when I stated hard reset. Sorry for the confusion.

I have some bizarre issues and even after factory reset I have the same problems. keithvetter experienced similar issues but they went away when he replaced his phone - http://forum.androidcentral.com/spr...ng-texts-while-epic-locked-up.html#post744512

Still, nobody has told me if there's any advantage to reflashing EC05 over doing the hard reset. If hard reset didn't fix things might reflashing fix things?

I have a Skinit skin. The skin they sent me has cut outs for the home row buttons. But they are too small so it's hard to make good skin contact. Their solution was to redesign the skin so that there are no cut outs in the skin where the buttons are. Apparently the buttons work through the skin. Problem is without cut outs you can tell when the buttons light up.

For me seeing those lights is a good indicator of when the phone is locked up. Either all the lights will be on or the lights don't flash when I touch the buttons. And in the dark you're really guessing about where to touch if you can't see the light. So I'm sticking with the original skin which they don't make anymore.

Well its all your choice, I just threw in my two cents. It is no secret that EB13 and probably EC05 have bugs that will pop up.

If these symptoms were happening on Eclair 2.1 then I would say you have possible hardware issues, if this is something that has started since updating to EB13/EC05 then that would lead to software.

well.. looks like this odin crap doesnt work on my computer. looks like no EC05 for a while. sux because im tired of the buggy android keyboard on eb13
