Strange new dark mode on Android 8.0 Oreo

[Android Central Question]

Hey guys. Got a funny question here.

I have a phone running Android 8.0 Oreo, and as you know Oreo doesn't support full dark mode yet like Pie does (apart from the wallpaper colour thing)

I have just noticed that at a certain time of day like in the evening, all my Google apps and apps like Instagram suddenly go into dark mode! My Google feed goes dark, Google Pay goes dark, Gmail goes dark basically most apps that support dark mode go dark!

Now I'm thinking, how is this possible on Android 8? This has never happened before and how is it happening?

I don't think any external app is causing this.

Could someone advise on why this is happening?

I have a Motorola G5s running Android 8.0 Oreo.

Individual apps can have a dark theme, which is different from the Dark Mode on Android 10. Dark Mode actually turns the notification panel and system settings background dark as well -- that's not happening to you, right?

Check each of those apps and see if they all have a dark theme option in their settings. For example, the Google app has that option, so I can use it in dark theme on my Lenovo Tab 4 8 running 8.1.
