Suggestion to Mods: Organizing the Rooting, ROMs & Hacks Section

First and foremost thanks to the Mods of this amazingly useful forum and to the developers of the ROMs, recoveries and tools that provide others with the ability to make their Optimus S a great device.

I've been a user of this forum since I got my Optimus in November and seen the tremendous influx of users/posts, especially in the last couple months which is awesome. The threads for the most popular ROMs continue for countless pages with a lot of repeat questions due to users being overwhelmed by the enormity of the thread length.

In order to provide folks with the best experience, I have a suggestion: Modify the "Rooting, ROMs, and Hacks for the LG Optimus S" to give each of the most popular ROMs individual sub-sections/folders. This would allow users to provide information/ask questions on specific topics related to that ROM rather than a never-ending single thread which some find hard to navigate.

I'd appreciate your thoughts and feedback on this idea.

Thanks again for your hard work!

I think that would be a good idea. Be a little easier for us newer members I think.

I participate in other forums where there is a "cap" on number of replies in a single thread. I participate in a car forum where the "cap" is 2000 replies, which is reasonable. There are already over 2700 replies in the thunderom thread. The CM7 Gingerbread thread is quickly approaching 2000 posts. At some point, it is helpful to lock the old thread and start fresh because the first 1000 posts are no longer that relevant.

I also agree with this. This may be too much to ask but I think that each rom/recovery/tool/etc should have it's own subforum with one subforum for user support, another for let's say feature requests, etc.

Just my .02 though.

I guess I'm the only one who thinks it's unnecessary, if we're looking for opinions here...of course, I'm the guy with 10,000 emails in my inbox, and no folders for organization. In my mind, the "search this forum" and "search this thread" tools work great. Having to click through LG Optimus S -> Rooting/Hacks -> ROMs -> CM7 -> Scott Pilgrim just to see the thread seems kind of silly. Even if the Scott Pilgrim thread is 3000 posts long, I can "search this thread" for "bluetooth" and see if anyone's made it work yet...

Also, having everything for, say, Scott Pilgrim in a single thread DOES mean that the same stupid questions get asked over and over, (Does Bluetooth work yet?, my bluetooth doesn't work., etc.)....

But having a whole folder for Scott Pilgrim just means we'll have multiple threads asking the same stupid questions. If people won't search, people won't search, no matter how much we organize things.

Shorty Jacobs: I appreciate your openness about preferring an unorganized layout as you mentioned your personal preference for disorganization. I would argue that as these forums grow we need to adapt to offer the majority of users the easiest, most user-friendly layout possible.

These forums are all about sharing information which in some cases (specifically with the ROMs) it is becoming extremely difficult to locate key information (which will continue to result in repeat questions and more difficult for new users to experience the great learning process that those of us that have been here circa 6 months have been able to.

It will be much easier for folks to obtain important information when, in all likelihood, it is in the thread name rather than deep in a huge thread. (This is not just in Scott Pilgrim CM7, from experience I know that ThundeROM and nROM both are long threads.

My proposal is start off with sub-folders for: ThundeROM, nROM, Scott Pilgrim CM7, Lego ROM and AOSP 2.3.3 / CM7.

If we decide it is not working, we can revert back to the current; if that happens, I am more than happy to volunteer to aid in the transition.

As far as multiple clicks, you can bookmark the folder of the ROM you are running for fast access.

I would like to see what the MODs have to say...

I can deal with it either way. Im used to the forum now for the most part... Searching becomes part of the fun almost :P

Ill "byte" my tongue now... and thats my $0.02

FitChicago: yup, just my opinion..
Not saying I am right or you are wrong.

I dunno, maybe it could work. We saw this problem before though, when mods started stickying ROMs and recoveries and kernels....and then they became more numerous and there were craptons of stickies.

It appears the mods had to finally give up and unsticky the whole mess.

Personally I follow most of the main threads (nROM, ThundeROM, both gingerbreads, and all the xionia stuff) so maybe I just keep up to date more than others...I just feel that if people don't search within threads now, then they wont search within subforums in the future...

I wouldn't be upset at all if the mods took your suggestion though...just offering my counteropinion.

Sent from my phone...excuse the spelling mistakrs.

ShortyJacobs: I definitely appreciate your feedback.

Sounds like we both follow the same threads and try to keep up to date. The reason for my suggestion has more to do with folks being able to maximize their Optimus S ROM'ing experience.

I'm the type of person who has no problem using the search function and spend an hour digging through an endless thread to find what I'm looking for before posting in a specific ROMs thread (although with some of the endless ROM threads, that process has become more difficult recently; and, don't you hate it when you're searching for something and the best search term is three letters and alternate terms provide a plethora of results...).

Anyway, you all want to move forward to test this out, I am more than happy to dedicate the time and effort to help the mods out any way I can.

In particular, I don't really see it working.

People don't search the Optimus forum as is. As much as I would love to see it organized, it would be a strain on the vB server to perform it all at once. Not only would they have to do it to the Optimus S forum, but they would have to do it on ANY forum with a ROMS, TOOLS, etc subforum...

It would have to be performed on a S-Mod level at a minimum to set the sub-forums up, and then Mods would have to pick through the threads, or at least split the first few posts off each and leave a link to info related, and then we'd have topics with a bunch of repeat questions either way... Mods would be left to move the proper threads into the proper forum.

Obviously, the Recoverys and Rooting threads would stay in place, but to me it makes sense the way it is.

A big concern I see is nobody wants to click through 183+ pages of stuff. Easy solution. TOP vB TOOLBAR: Quick Links > Edit Options > Show 40 posts by default. Little longer load time, less screens to load. Quicker to skim through posts and try to find something relevant.

Also, SUBSCRIBING to forums is another option given to people who dont want a bunch of bookmarks (i don't bookmark anything) - they show up in your UserCP. Can also set threads to subscribe, so any time you come, click on "show first unread post" and catch up?

As I said, I would like to see it, but it would be a LOT of work (I've run vB forums before...)
