When a notification banner pops up at the top of the screen, you can either swipe it up or sideways. What is the difference? Surely there has to be.. right?

I have a galaxy s4 running 5.0.1

Side question: I saw people saying that swiping is a 5.1 feature and that they can't swipe banners on 5.0.1. If im on 5.0.1, why am I able to swipe banners?

Welcome to Android Central!

Swiping up dismisses the notification but keeps it in the status bar. Swipe left/right removes the notification from your notification tray.

As far as why you but not others can do this? I'm not sure.
