Switching sims, keeping numbers?

[Android Central Question]

My Note 2 (Well, my fathers actually) was water-damaged and I recently was just sent a newer Moto phone that requires a nano sim (as most modern smart-phones now do). Would there be a way for me to get a new sim card (a nano) with the same phone number as that which was on the old sim? Or would getting a new sim card require me to get a new number as well? Thanks for putting up with my ignorance.

Carriers do it all the time, go see the carrier and get the proper sized SIM card, they'll register it for the existing phone number.
