T-mobile $30 Unlimited data, Text, 100Min Voice

I fail to see why you wouldn't get 3g if 4 wasn't available, so long as the phone worked on that frequency.

It's illogical to ONLY lock them to 2 and 4g, bypassing 3.
Especially when 4g is just a modified 3g to begin with.

Didn't you post on the first page that it drops to 2g?....

When you reach the 5gb 4g max, it will drop to 2g. It was said in the press release thing.

Leslie, I believe, was saying that there would be no logical reason that if you did not have 4g, that you would go straight to 2g, without hitting 3g in between. So no 4g? You get 3g. No 3g? You get 2g. No 2g? Well you don't have data.

Correct.
Not every place has 4g, so there is no way to get it period. In fact it's only major cities that have it.
You would get the fastest speed you can get, up to the limit, at which point it drops to 2g as a limit.

I willing to jump all over this with a new tmo phone, but the better part of me is saying wait till this whole at&t/T-Mobile deal settles and the dust is clear as to know what t-mobiles future is, I'm assuming if the merger goes through then all T-Mobile customers are SOL? Is that just speculation at this point?

You won't be SOL, however, rumor is that all plans will remain as they are for a year at least.
So you spend $200-$500 on a phone and then in a year they could turn you off,

I'm waiting to see how the Black plays out.
This plan has too few minutes to really be worthwhile, but I am looking at alternatives. Virgin needs to get with the program as they are at risk of falling behind. new deals are coming out, some other mvno's are offering byod, and frankly I'm tired of seeing so many new devices out and we get stuck with them a year later, or they are just junk. Frankly, I'm almost astonished we got the OV, much less when we did.

I guess I misunderstood. I thought you meant it was either 4g or it dropped straight to 2g. My bad.

Isn't actual 2G speed less than 200kbps?

Idk....I'm cool with Virgin Mobile (Love my OV) I just hate dealing with the Top Up aspect, as i don't have them automatically draw from my card anymore.....Long Story...I wanted to call Mr. Branson on that one personally..But , with the plans that they offer its so easy to be flexible every month....They do need some higher powered handsets in the line up though...No offense to anybody, but the Triumph? Not where its at...The OV needs a Big Brother that has its reliability and stable operation. Then maybe Jerry and Leslie could cook us up something yummy in the dual core range??? Just a thought...

I cant agree with you any more. With the addition of android tot he straight talk line its making it harder and harder to stick with Virgin. Even tho the phones are similar to what we have the ability to roam and have service everywhere and not just in major metro and along major highways is very nice.

Honestly I dont want a HTC Thunderbolt or a Nexus Prime, I want a decent phone with a mod community that is active and friendly. Sadly once I do leave my Optimus V behind that prolly wont be found. Most phones either arent supported or the devs are a-holes. If you find a supported phone with non a-hole devs, you find out they are ship-jumpers. In that as soon as the next big thing comes out they jump ship and leave stuff half finished or completely un-supported.

I hope to see even more plans like the new $30 T-Mobile plan. VM needs other carriers to add to the fire under it's butt. It won't be about to sit around peddling Triumphs anymore while saying "We Dare You to Find a Better Android Plan", because, we are starting to see some!

T-Mobile should really rethink that 100 minutes thing though. At 100 minutes, it scrapes at the VM $25/$35 plan. If they bumped it to 200-250 minutes, it would cut deep.

I feel like I barely use the phone at all, and even I clock in between 120-160 minutes a month.

If I switch to the Black, that will happen.
I do NOT like the Triumph.
Sorry to those who do, but it's shaped poorly, poorly constructed and has too many problems. I woudl have rather seen them not bother with it, and give us the Black sooner. I think customers would have been happier. I don't expect Virgin to sell the Triumph for long unless Huawei gets the quality up.

Ship jumping does happen, but some phones seem to hang on longer.

Roaming would be nice, but T-mobile scares me with tethering. I don't do it often and never more than couple hundred megs when I do, usually much less, but I'm not sure how T-Mobile will react to it. This was a prime reason I went with VM and the OV and Blackberry.

As for phones...
While a bunch of people are complaining about the OV being too expensive these days, find an alternative, I dare you. Go look at what postpaid or other pre-paid want for the Optimus. It is a darn hard phone to beat for the money, even when you look at used. Then if you look at unlocked phones, wow! Some say Virgin doesn't subsidize their phones, they don't, but they do remove much of the markup.

And no way am I going for a Nexus Prime. 4.65in screen? What were they thinking? I'll look silly with that thing in my pocket. I want a phone, not a giant slab of plastic. Personally, I would like 3.75, a nice balance between the Black and the OV.

For the money and what they have to offer straight talk is looking more and more competitive to VM. They have the new samsung galaxy precedent available now for 149 bucks then the fully unlimited plan is 45 bucks a month. Yeah its 20 more than some of us pay but its still 10 bucks cheaper than the current VM fully unlimited plan. Plus you have the ability to roam. For most people its not necessary but where I live and the route I have to take to meet my ex-wife I travel about 90 miles of a 150 mile trip without service. I know before cell phones we did the same thing but we live in a technology world and there really isnt a reason for it anymore.

LeslieAnn I seen a article this weekend about the iphone and the reason its still a small screen. Supposedly its because most normal people can manipulate the phone one handed in a comfortable position. I dont get the reason for the huge 4+ inch screens. Yes its easier to see text and watch videos on. However the size of the iphone is perfect for me. Thats why I like my Optimus V so much. I have a laptop and desktop if its necessary for me to watch a video while Im away from those the V does it just fine.

The biggest thing the Prime has that Im excited about is the curvature of the phone. Now that looks damn awesome.

I'm also in the camp of "no use for anymore than a 4" screen".

I find the 3.5" screen on my iPod touch and the iPhone pretty ideal. The OV is slightly cramped, but not awful. I'd like to never have to use anything with more than a 4 inch screen. Bigger than that, with a case on they look little cricket bats.

From what I've read, the Precedent is basically the same as the Prevail on Boost Mobile... Right down to using the same network... So I'm not sure where the roaming comes in. I've also read that some areas can't use the phone, because Sprint doesn't have towers in the area. I was just wondering if I missed something.

As far as I know sprint will work pretty much anywhere as long as you can get a signal. One of the key parts of straight talk is the service supposedly works most anywhere.

Also for the price they advertise roaming service available. But then again Ive only used their "dumb" phones.

And I stand corrected. Just hoped onto their facebook page and its saying the new optimus phone will be sprint prepaid...that blows.

As for Straight Talk, look on their coverage map. It looks like roaming only apples to dumb phones. They have a different coverage map for Android phones with barely any coverage.

Yeah its definately the sprint prepaid network. Which again blows ass. If I wanted to pay for crap coverage I would just keep the VM phone. I cant complain about the phone or service other than damn we need better roaming for what we pay.

Honestly, we can't complain about roaming even, for the time being. However, VM is losing ground. As others pricing nears VM's with better coverage, VM is going to have to battle to stay where they are.

Together with the price increase, poor service, outages and poor coverage... These other companies are closing in fast.

VM made it's name with good customer service, and very low cost compared to others.
The costs have gone up (still good though), CS is now a joke, and the actual phone service has become problematic due to growth.
