T-Mobile S7 - turning off wifi auto-connect?

The wifi functionality is very frustrating on my new S7. The phone automatically connects to any open wifi network. This usually results in connecting to a network with extra authentication required (say, a hotel wifi) so then my internet stops working.

There is no setting under wifi to turn this auto-connection off. I already have Hotspot 2.0 turned Off.

Additionally, the whole Settings->Wi-Fi interface is confusing. It does not show which network is currently connected. And, if I long press on the network I'm currently connected to, the popup menu option is "Connect" rather than "Disconnect" so I can't figure out how to disconnect (or forget) any wifi network.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to Android Central! Are you checking the Advanced Wi-fi settings? Go to Settings>Wi-fi, tap More>Advanced, and look there.

If you already checked there, then see if there are any preinstalled apps (probably from the carrier) that do this. Look specifically for "wi-fi optimizer" apps.

As B. Diddy said it's an optimize thing. Turn wifi on, going under advanced, and turn off hotspot 2.0 within the settings.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the Advanced Wi-Fi settings and I already have everything turned off (Hotspot 2.0 specifically). Good suggestion re "wi-fi optimizer" apps - I don't see any that look like they would do this, unless it's the actual T-Mobile app...

Definitely check the T-Mobile app. I think other carrier apps do this kind of thing.

I just spent an hour on the phone with "Advanced Support" at Samsung. Apparently the T-Mobile version is lacking the option that we are suppose to have under advanced options. My wifi also forgets the password to my home wifi everytime i disconnect or leave the house and come back. I am about to sell the device and go back to Iphone 6S... Samsung recommended a visit to a Samsung Experience Shop to have the phone re-flashed to see if the option would be installed then. Annoyed

I finally figured my S7 out and it hasn't done it in a while, I have xfinity/Comcast and the xfinity WiFi app was auto turning on my WiFi you can disable it it settings through the app from xfinity

Welcome to Android Central! Yep, thanks for mentioning that one--any of those kinds of apps from carriers or broadband providers should be suspect.
