As stated by johnsamuels, he was required to upgrade due to the memory capacity of the SIM Card. SIM Cards to have a limit to how much data they can store. They are partitioned like any other storage device and some SIM Cards allow you to store Contact Info and other data, but if the partition that stores the account/network info is too small, you need to get a new SIM Card that will allow the additional configuration to be stored.
Now, this does not solve the debate of you NEEDING a new card, but if you have issues and whatnot, one of the reasons they will swap cards is to give you a clean slate to start from and see if that is the issue. Chances are, older cards have enough space, but as they roll out more network components and the various 5G standards being used (LTE 5G vs. Stand Alone), there may not be enough room to store all of the configs needed.
In the end, if you have an older SIM Card, get a new one and you'll have less issues in the future. If you are so attached to your SIM Card that you don't want to switch, then don't switch.
