Try this:
Select "All Programs" - button.
Then select "Settings",
Open the "SD-card & phone storage",
at the bottom you can see:
"Internal phone storage - Available space 118 MB (on my phone)

I'm coming late in the game, but I also do not see that this "apps that used to open on their own, now don't" rings true ?

I currently can see Peep, Stocks an Footprints running as Service using Advanced Task Manager.

Even if I kill them, they seem to start up again...how do you turn these off. I just do not need to use them

yeah i dont use peep at all and it keeps starting up on its own i took the task panel off but i still only show about 70mb of space free.

I had Advance Task Killer installed on my phone and i did noticed that my handset was not lasting as long. I removed it and installed Task Panel. I had that for a couple of days and it was running fine after I started reading the first post of this thread. I removed the app and rebooted the phone and did not get enough improvement at all on memory.

I've had my phone for two weeks now (hero), and maby have 6-7 apps.. I have 139 MB of space available in internal phone storage. I have never used a task killer on it.. But thats physical storage right? not memory..? Because when i try starting up like 3-4 apps it's still 139.. Only time it's get lower is when i install new apps.. I tought apps installed to the sd card, but apparently not. Sorry for the not so perfect english!

Been running without a task killer for a week now. I'm pleased with the performance and "stability" but it still gets sluggish during heavy use (flipping through app's/browsing/phone calls/ect). Particularly annoying when trying to type a msg and your dealing with a system lag.

I'm "feeling" that android isn't managing system resources as well as it should ("feeling" vs. "knowing" because I'm not using a task manager as recommended). I did note that was able to open the browser and flip back through all the pages I had gone through on the previous day. Shouldn't the system manager have shut that down during the period of inactivity? (yes the browser saves the history and cookies but when the task killer "used" to kill it the browser started fresh) Makes me wonder what else it isn't closing. What is it doing with apps I never use that I know runs in the background (footprints, ect)? How well does it handle 3ed party apps? Without a task manager I am unable to view running processes. Some 3ed party apps like to run in the background at start up. Now I cant install a new app without wondering how "invasive" they are and how well android is handling them.

Multiple threads here referring to "available system memory" viewed via [Menu-> settings-> sd card & phone storage->available memory]. As I understand it this is the amount of available physical memory NOT being utilized for data storage (system and apps). This is the "space available" to install additional apps. This remaining space will be utilized by android to run the applications and store temporary data (web pages and stuff). I.E. if 40% of your memory is being used for application storage, you will have 60% memory available for running those applications. Therefor viewing your available memory via [sd card & phone storage] will NOT allow you to determine how much memory all of your RUNNING apps are using.

I'll give it some more time "letting Android drive", but I'm considering reinstalling a task manager to handle some of the more process intensive applications.(back seat driver?) Besides it seems silly having an open source software device and NOT tweaking it. Love the phone in any event.

that makes alot of sense me and my wife have both been letting android do the driving (so to speak) and removed our task killers, and its not that much of an improvement thinking about installing it again because of all the background apps that i know are running like footprints and those stupid sprint apps that i never use...
