Terrible Camera

Is it possible to get a "dud" camera? All I've heard is how great the camera is supposed to be but so far it just seems... not good... at all. I though it would be cool to try it out on the sunrise the other morning, the entire sky was bright orange and the clouds all pretty and purple, but none of that showed up on the camera, unless i played around with the sliders in manual mode, and the only way i could get the colors was if the entire foreground was pitch black, you could hardly even see the huge red barn in my yard (if i wanted to see anything in the foreground the entire sky ended up completely white with absolutely no colors at all). It just seems to take awful pictures in low light in general, just in my living room during the day the pictures i take are way darker than the room actually is (brightness on phone is all the way up, not auto). Anything i try to take a picture of that isn't within 5 feet of me has no detail and looks blurry and just terrible, but i will say that close ups look pretty good. The thing that shocked me most was that the pictures i took with my HTC One m7 last spring on vacation are better than the ones i get with my G4, in both color and clarity. The m7 camera is trash. Has anyone else had any problems like this? Also, I'm not sure if its related but the sound quality of videos i take is really bad too, and no matter how quiet it is there's always a high pitched ringing in my videos. I gave up on the camera completely after owning it for a week because it just wasn't worth using.

I believe it takes wonderful pictures. You might have a dud. I took some of these in Manual and one in Auto

And some low light:

I find that the G4's camera acquits itself well even compared to that of my Nokia Lumia 1020, generally accepted as the best smartphone camera.

Anything can be defective, of course. Could you post some sample pics from it, for reference? I haven't really tried any videos on mine, so I can't comment on weird noises.

Posting the pics that didn't work might be helpful. Like the person who was trying to take a picture of a black dog that was back-lit by a lamp, sometimes it's just not possible if you have extremely dark areas and extremely bright areas.

Camera works well for me mostly. Here are two pictures one bright day and one in pitch black with just ambient light hitting the signs.
