I didn't bother reading all the posts, but:
This happened ever since I got my phone, but only on Froyo. The radio updates never seemed to make a difference. It stopped, however, when I put GB / Sense 3 on my phone. The stock messaging app is total crap, imo. I had problems with it sending messages to the wrong people and getting very laggy if I had more than 100 messages. The newer messaging app on GB (or is it sense 3 that changed it?) works like a charm. If you're stuck on Froyo, then I suggest you look into an aftermarket app like SMS Pro or something.

You may want to try a third-party SMS app like GOSMS or Handcent. Supposedly, the bug only affects the stock app.

If you think about it and could ask him if GB will fix this issue I would appreciate it.
ill put a sticky note on my home screen to tweet them Monday. But I'm sure gb will fix it as long as there aware of it. In the mean time as long as you use another SMS app other then the stock one you will not have this issue.
This was happening to me and it turned out that ifi had too many texts in a conversation that it would get buggy. Once I hit about 100 texts in a conversation I delete it...seems to have helped.
Ya know, I have noticed this too. I set mine to auto delete on 200, guess I should go lower. I never really thought it was part of the issue, but now that I think about it the 2 ppl I have at 200 messages are the ones I notice getting sent to random ppl.
Though maybe I just notice it more with them because we text a lot?

my friend was having this issue, we were both on stock ROM but rooted and he was using GoSMS and myself using stock and then eventually handcent. His would show that it sent it to the right person but then when the person would respond it would actually show the real person it went to. I later threw bamf 2.1 on my phone and then convinced him to do the same and he still had the same issue. I am still using stock SMS app, no issues ever to begin with but hes still having the wrong person SMS issue. He is still using GoSMS so i told him to try handcent or stock app and see if its happening.

After. Before the update, I noticed that occasionally I would select a text conversation, and it would open a different one, but I could just back out and retry the correct one. However, after the update I will be typing a text to someone, verify it is the right person, and once I hit send, I have watched the contact name change, and the text is sent to someone else. However, it (so far) has only sent to someone who I have exchanged texts with (i.e. there is a text to or from them listed in "All Messages"). This has happened 4 or 5 times in the time since the update.

Same here. It happened a couple times consecutively while I had like 12 different conversations going, each with ~50 texts, a few with 100+. I started deleting entire conversations since the erroneous sends were only going to contacts I had open conversations with, and since then the problem seems to have been "solved" ('improved' is probably a better word choice). I guess the stock texting app can't handle the high volume.
Well Verizon customer support official sucks on twittter. Got someone to respond they wanted examples I linked them to this thread and they wanted none of it. So let's hope its a froyo issue because Verizon support ain't going to help us here.
HTC is much more helpful and they do read the forms for feedback. Here's the one tweet I got back

Same here after the update. I thought it was something I did the first time it happened. I was more focused on what was happening the next few times it happened. Watched the contact name/picture change AFTER hitting send. Annoying, but not as annoying as reboot issue. I wiped just the two contacts the erroneous texts went to. They were the two contacts I text the most. It hasn't happened since. After reading this thread I'm delete all conversions and keep them under 100 messages until there is a real fix. Thanks every one. I thought I was crazy
