Text going out to wrong person

From attempting to analyze this thread, I see two probable causes for this behavior.

1) Too quick on the trigger - don't wait for message interface to catch up when beginning a text, resulting in sending to the wrong person after the interface finally displays the real recipient. Seems like waiting and verifying the recipient before starting to type would "fix" this.

2) Leaving draft messages in your draft folder, resulting in the phone "resuming" an old message to someone else by mistake. This might be cured by making sure you never have any "draft" messages. You can get a "draft" by mistake by simply starting to reply then changing your mind and using the [Return] arrow to back out. This automatically (and maybe unintentionally) saves a Draft. If you have a draft message you can tell by Messages | Menu - if you see Draft, you have one or more and should delete them. If you do not have any drafts, you will not see a Draft folder at all.

Just my thoughts. I have never had this issue. But, I keep my drafts deleted and I'm a slow texter (the interface is faster than I am anyway) :)

I hate to break it to you Frank but I too have this problem and I delete drafts, type slow, have cleared my cache, and have message threads under 100. I didn't have this problem until the last update and much like everyone else it has lead to some interesting situtions like messages to one person going to facebook or messages to my fiancee going to her father.

It has happened for me several times before the update....and it was really embarrassing..then yesterday, it happened again. The first time in about a month and a half. And I sent it to my gf's mom...ewps..

You can break it to me. I can take it. :)

I'm just happy I've not had this issue pre/post updates. Everything is still at defaults. No Facebook though. FWIW.

I think as long as u have less then 100 messages in each thread then u should not have a issue

So with a little testing I have been able to make this happen every single text if the messaging app is lagging. Regardless of the number of messages, threads, drafts. As long as the messaging app is lagging I have texts flying to whom ever the app sees fit.

Idk if there is a way to stop the app/restart the app without just rebooting the phone. Either way I have not had another oops moment since waiting the lag out.

This happens to me a lot. The person I text the most (90% of the time at least) is my Fiance. And sometimes I'll type something, be completely sure that it is going to her, and then the second I hit send it says that it's going to my buddy Matty or Ryan instead. It's annoying because then I have to make some stupid joke like "oh, that was for her but I love you too buddy." The only thing I can do to prevent it is to delete my messages with all of my friends once I'm done the conversation. That way, the only person who is "outstanding" in my text inbox is her. If someone else is outstanding, then there's a possibility that I'll end up sending the text to them instead. If they can just get this, plus the GPS, fixed, I'll be pretty darn happy.

I averted an "incident" recently with this same issue. I send a truckload of text messages and only delete offending entries not permissable for all eyes, and this has happened twice now, once innocently and the other dangerously, however the unintended recipient was a good friend (but we text back and forth rarely) I would imagine this could drastically change interpersonal relationships in peoples lives and I wonder if there would be any accountability on the bug for breaking up a family or causing an employer to view one in an unflattering light.

This is more annoying than the random reboots. Has anyone got Verizon to acknowledge the issue at all? It's so embarrassing to text the wrong person.

I'm thinking about using an IM app until this is fixed if I can get other people to use one too.

Funny I see this. Last night laying in bed my wife gets a text from my friends wife (whom she hasn't spoken with in 2 weeks) that says:

"okay, cool. So does that mean you'll be home soon?"

My wife: "huh"

Friend: "sorry, that was weird. I sent that to somebody else!"

My friends wife has a Galaxy S on T-Mobile.

Just happened to me for the first time, yesterday. Called Verizon today and told them about this issue and an issue I'm having trying to connect to my wireless network. The Verizon rep said it was a known Froyo issue and he has had it too. He called an HTC rep to help with the wireless issue and I also told him about the texts going to the wring person. He said it had to be a network issue and he had never heard of the problem. Go figure!

Happened to me for the first time today too - I've only had the phone since mid-July. Fortunately the inadvertent text recipient was my google voice account so no harm done :)

As far as I can tell, this is the Google Android/Froyo text messaging bug - it looks like it was fixed by Google in Android 2.2.2, but Verizon/HTC hasn't updated us to that.

Looks like it's time for me to root. It's a terrible problem that Google isn't able to push the update to us!

Hello everyone,

I had this problem too. Called Verizon and they sent me out a replacement Thunderbolt. Activated that replacement and spent hours getting all the settings how I wanted. The next day it happened again. With both phones it happened only after the software update. I nearly lost my mind. Called Verizon and said this is a dealbreaker if I can't trust my phone to text, so they offered me a Samsung Charge. It arrived today, but the battery arrives tomorrow. I'm so annoyed that I had to spend $249 on this phone and now have to end up with a refurb piece-meal thing. I hope I even get everything it's supposed to come with, like a wall charger..

I've been having this problem too.

Does anyone have a straight answer as to what the problem is and/ or a solution?

In reading this thread and others on the subject, I've found:

it's either a known issue with froyo that is solved by rooting and running a gingerbread rom, or it still happens on even the latest custom roms;

or it's a problem with the stock sms application that is solved with handsent, or out still happens with any of the alternative apps,

or it's caused by having more than 100 messages in one conversation, or out can happen with only a few messages to only a couple of contracts.

I have no idea what the problem is. I don't want to waste a bunch of time chasing my tail, but I really need a solution asap.

Just download a new sms app. I just got go sms pro after a text went to the wrong person today. It was the last straw.

So far I'm really liking go sms pro, very customizable and from what I have read solves the sms issue with the stock app.

I guess time will tell.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but....Go SMS Pro will not solve this issue. I have been using it for some time and I really like it better than the stock SMS program, but the wrong person bug still happens. I had it happen last week.

I've had this happening as well. Very frustrating . . . maybe it is root time.

This is sure a strange phenomenon. It has never once happened to me. Strange.
