Android Central Question

Hi, I have a Galaxy S-10+.

The speech to text is malfunctioning. When I give a punctuation command, it spells out the word, exactly like this "{explanation-point}" or "comma}" or "{question mark}" instead of giving me the character. This happened suddenly.

It happens anytime I give a voice punctuation command while texting, emailing or calendar.

I changed from Google text to speech to Samsung text to speech.

I cleared cache in Google and Google and Samsung text to speech engine.

I restarted by phone several times.

The Apps are up to date

There's some old threads from 2016/2017 with the same problem. No solutions.

I think it's strange that the problem has been around that long but I can't find fixes?

Thank you!

Hi mustang7757: I just downloaded the latest version of Gboard and it does the same thing. So I've tried Samsung keyboard and Gboard with Google voice typing and they neither will use the punctuation character. They just spell out the word as I said in my 1st post. It's worked fine for years. Nothing has changed that I'm aware of. The issue arose suddenly!

Hi , welcome to AC?
Hmm.. couple things to try , put the phone in safe mode, if still happening go into recovery and clear cache. Try these steps if still issue we can continue.

What I had said then deleted in my comment was what you had found in your research, there's no solution at this time. It's not a setting, it's not a bug, it's Google. Until they fix it there's nothing you or I could do to correct this.

Feel free to continue your search but probably the most effective thing that can be done would be to add your comments to the Google development page or use the feedback option on the Google GBoard app page.

Thanks for the suggestions. The problem magically went away yesterday when I first used my phone. That was the first and hopefully the last time the problem occurs. It seems to have fixed itself!

Results of Experimenting with Speech-to-Text on Galaxy S7 while Texting: default apps

I just tried to provide a comprehensive list of ways to do speech-to-text for a few dozen of symbols, numerics, and so on, and I couldn't get past the SPAM filter on the website. It keeps telling me to "remove all references to money".

So I did that. I removed all references to speech-to-text methods for dollars, euros, dollar and cent signs, etc...except for the actual word "money" where I simply kept a line to inform folks that "speech-to-text methods for entering symbols for money associated information were removed per the spam filter on this website".

Not just relying on the Mark-1 eyeball, I also did machine searches for $, cents, and so on...and the filter STILL bans my comment as SPAM.

The PREVIEW is NOT BANNING this comment because of the $ symbol or using the words for money, cents, dollars, etc. I'm including in this comment.

Since it didn't ban THIS comment, I have no idea why my other comment is banned as "money" spam.
