The Coronavirus Maze-How are we navigating it today?

Probably just another of his hyperboles. Yesterday Serbia implemented some of the measures already in place in many countries all around the world, including some counties in the US. Night curfew and movement restrictions for the elderly.

Many European countries declared an estate of emergency/alarm and restricted movement for all their citizens in order to slow the pandemic and make it more manageable. Unfortunately these radical and painful measures are necessary for many reasons already explained in this thread.

I guess he still thinks these international efforts to contain the pandemic are some kind of planetary conspiracy.
Not a conspiracy but excessive

I sure hope my cat doesn't get Corona virus and give it to my elderly grandmother. The elderly are the people I am worried about. The rest of us who are younger are pretty much unable to even feel. I don't think there is some worldwide conspiracy but I still think reactions are a slight tinge excessive.

Who knows. Maybe I am biased by the fact that here in NM we only have 28 cases according to bing.com/covid and there is no serious panic aside from panic buying and some minor warning emails from my campus administration, and also the fact that I do not trust absolutely everything I read on the news. I do believe the virus is bad but it still is IMO a bit overhyped.

As far as I know, cats and dogs can't contact the virus but they can be carriers of the virus. My vet sent me updates confirming that notion. Does your cat go outdoors? Keeping him or her indoors could help things as well. It's definitely natural to be concerned.

Update: As of March 18th, Serbia is implementing MARSHAL LAW. "Movement" (whatever that means) will be BANNED from 20:00-05:00 each night for normal people, and those 65+ are banned ALL DAY LONG. Good thing I am not back there. I'm not gonna comment on this aside from the fact that it basically destroys constitutional rights. Hopefully it doesn't get this extreme in the US.

They, like many other countries, are just trying to decrease community spread because many citizens are not listening and contributing to the spread of the virus. It’s smart and can save lives.

My cat is an outdoor/indoor hybrid habitat floof. Praying he doesn't get Covid19 somehow

My campus extended the break another week... (see attached email screenshot).

On the other hand I have a feeling that they might end up having to cancel the semester, which I would NOT like as I have one low-credit class grade that needs a little fixing and I also want the education that my parents paid for. Also, once (or should I say, IF) we resume classes it will all be online. Edit: I don't want Coronacrap to mess with my education more than it already did.

Maybe ask your grandma to keep your cat indoors for the time being? Your cat may not like it but it will keep him or her safe!

Also, please keep us posted on what happens with your education. Online classes will be a drag but hopefully they don't cancel the semester and you can get your money's worth. I totally get what you're saying.

Cancelled trips & inconvenience is the least of your worries as the death rate continue to climb, not to mention the buckling of financial/corporate systems. We are in the midst of an ncov apocalypse so i enjoin everyone to isolate and stay safe... buckle up as things are headed to the worst case scenario!

While we all have personal struggles and seemingly uphill battles, we all need to keep in in mind that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

Totally. Life can suck so sometimes I might come off as ignorant when writing under stress .

This is not overblown. This is a pandemic. Hospitals are getting increasing volumes of sick patients, like the one I work at. If you're not on the frontlines, you can't really understand the gravity of the situation, and the potential for catastrophe like they're facing in Italy. It really is important to try to flatten this curve. I think we as a country can do it, but it does require everyone to cooperate and help each other out.

Although it may be true that the case fatality rate is probably not a ton higher than influenza (which still kills many people every season), the difference here is that COVID-19 is very contagious with a fairly long incubation period, thus contributing to wider spread. Since it's so contagious, it also means that hospitalized patients have to remain in hospital for longer before they can be sent home, thus creating a logjam. Those who suffer respiratory failure and require a mechanical ventilator also need to be on the machine for longer as well, contributing even further to the logjam (and the biggest fear from intensive care doctors, the availability of ventilators if the demand becomes overwhelming).

A lot of you out there are probably lower risk for severe complications because you're on the younger side (and hopefully don't have chronic illnesses like diabetes, COPD, or immunocompromised states). But remember, many of your family members and other loved ones may fall in this category, so please think of them as well.
Given your credentials, I fully understand the medical implications behind this. I agree precautions should be taken. I just think some people have taken this too far. The hoarding being one of them. Especially the guy with 17,000 containers of hand sanitizer.

For me, what I don't understand is how the media seems to imply that this virus has a high mortality rate. If fear mongering was a crime can we put all of the mainstream media on trial for crimes against humanity?

I would recommend to everyone here to follow the news from Europe, specially from countries like Italy and Spain (where most of my family lives). The crisis is very bad and the cold numbers and personal tragedies are terrible.

Please, this is a serious pandemic and every attempt to paint the response as overblown is wrong and very dangerous.

Please. Be safe. Be smart. Be solidary.

The data is still hard to interpret right now, because it's hard to know how many unreported cases there might be -- obviously, if those cases are mild, then the actual mortality rate goes down. But a couple of the main differences here are that this coronavirus appears to be significantly more contagious than other viruses like influenza and has a longer incubation period (thus allowing for more potential for spread), which therefore leads to greater penetration into the population. If the mortality rate truly is around 2-3% (which doesn't sound too high on the surface), that still leads to a huge number of hospitalizations and deaths from a population standpoint.

The panic is the biggest problem. I cannot get basic stuff here in New Mexico. Freaking ridiculous. And the bleach drinkers who do dumb crap they see online are very active in my town FYI.

I would disagree that panic causing a shortage of basic amenities is a bigger problem than the spread of the virus and the fatalities that it brings to bare.

It has a much higher mortality rate than influenza. That’s a fact. Not as many people have died to this point and that is what we are trying to prevent.

Let’s stop attacking the media whose job is to report the news. I agree that it has become overbearing and probably makes people more anxious but they did not create this. If people would just listen to experts things will turn out much better.

I have a GP appointment tomorrow, which I thought about cancelling due to COVID-19, since it was just a general checkup. I don't have to do anything, since my doc is going to call me, rather than see me in person. That's great to me, since the last place I want to be is around sick people.

For those that think it’s overblown or we are all overreacting, just ask that family from NJ and see if they feel that way as well.

This is serious, and they say still worse to come. People need to do as they ask or we will see more things happening as in Cali.
