...and continue to be serviceable, I think it's safe to say the concept of Li-ion batteries in general is sound.

That article was mostly fear mongering. Only a fraction of lithium batteries across the board have been an issue, and no they aren't all ticking time bombs. It's easy to cherry pick a relative few issues spanning decades of use and make it look like an epidemic. Unless you're physically abusing the battery by damaging the cell or puncturing it, you really have very little to worry about unless something pops up like the Note 7 issue.

Be mindful, but don't be afraid.
