The HTC One will be a hit, pass Galaxy S4 for ONE reason..

I really need a new phone, so the extra $100 trade-in along with being first to market I will probably get the HTC One if it releases early enough. If I was with Verizon as my carrier then I would probably get the S4 since the HTC One won't be available until middle of the year. However what people don't understand is both phones, along with the LG Optimus G Pro, are top of the line phones with smoking hardware. You really can't go wrong with either one unless there is some major defect.

The reality is that the S4 will outsell the HTC One. It is called brand recognition. Samsung spent a bunch of time in September placing major advertising against the iPhone 5 and those people who were under contract were thinking, "when I get a new phone it will be a S3." Now that the S4 are out those same people are excited to move to the new S4. HTC really doesn't have the same brand recognition as Samsung has. Yes other features like ultra-pixels, larger screens, aluminum, removable batteries and SD cards, all make a difference, however brand recognition will win every time.

At no point did I say the S3 phone range was actually cheap or intrinsically bad (although my particular device was plagued with software issues but that's not a conversation for this thread) and it certainly didn't stop me from buying the phone. But, my opinion, which is no less or more valid than your own, was that I thought it looked cheap.

Then I wasn't talking to you, right? Several have said "cheap plastic" and a few have even claimed it is only used to save a buck.

Anyway, I do agree the S3 (and the S4 from the pictures I've seen so far) looks cheep. Most especially the "plasti-chrome" bezel. Horribly cheap in fact. I can't imagine a cheaper looking finish than plasti-chrome. Reminds me of the badges/lettering used on economy cars in the eighties. Just...ewww.

I've very, very interested in the ONE. Aluminum definitely looks cooler, as does everything else about it. I like the 4.7" screen and overall shape, as it appears to stick closer to the S2 in that regard than the S3 and S4 do. They're just a tad too big for my taste. My biggest questions/concerns are: 1. How do we get to the menu in apps? 2. Can I make the stock Android launcher the default instead of Sense? 3. Yeah, I'm nervous about an unswappable battery. Never had one before, but willing to risk it. 4. This is the biggest, and I hardly ever see anybody ask questions like this, but how are the radios? Does gps lock on quickly and hold good accuracy even in poor conditions? Are calls nice and clear even in fringe areas? Can I get a decent data signal further out of town than I'm used to now? You know twelve years ago I had a Sanyo candybar style phone. No, it couldn't do hardly anything a modern smart phone can do. But you know what it could do? It could make and keep a call going at my cabin where I know for a fact my GS2, my wife's GS3 and her previous Evo4G won't get a cell signal.

Because 4.7 is the optimal screen size.

That makes literally no sense.
The One is 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3
The GS4 is 136.6 x 69.8 mm x 7.9 mm

The phones are essentially identically sized in your hand, with a few minor differences. Your hand doesn't magically change size with a larger screen--you still have to work your way across it. It's just a question of whether its moving across a larger screen, or a larger bezel.

220 minutes for the chassis. Not the total phone.
Hmmm... I'm not seeing that anywhere. I believe they said they put 220 minutes into each phone. That isn't the same as 220 minutes into each phone chassis. And as an aside, while the chassis is machined, the pcb, battery, screen, antenna, etc., are manufactured separately. They don't machine a block of aluminum, send it to another department where they then solder components onto a pcb by hand and then send that to another department where they put it all together and then give the green light to the CNC department to make another chassis. Do you think they only make 6.5 phones per day?

That's OK mate, I shan't take offence :)

1) I believe you long press the home button to get to the menu. I'm sure I read that somewhere in a review.
2) No idea but hopefully someone more knowledgeable in this sort of thing will be along shortly.
3) Fair enough, a lot of people are bothered by the lack of a removable battery. A legitimate concern for some, not so much for me, to be honest.
4) Yes, The number one most important thing for me is the radio and whether I can get a signal out in the sticks.

Because the main reason anybody wants the "one" is because it doesn't say Samsung anywhere on it and they are here for validation. You don't s see people taking about how good the "one" is, just bashing sammy so they feel better about not buying s4's

Well I've been here since day 1 and plenty of folks are talking about how great the One is. Ironic, since 99.9% of us haven't touched it, or the GS4 for that matter. But it sure seems to me that lots of Sammy fans migrated here to bash the One and say "HTC sucks" and "Sense sucks" and "every HTC phone I've ever had caught on fire in my pocket so HTC sucks". I think they were bored for the last few weeks waiting for the GS4 to be announced. Now that both are announced it's just a full blown battle royal, Warriors-style. Which I find hilarious.

Personally, I don't bash Samsung so I feel better about not buying the GS4. I haven't had a Samsung smartphone in my home that wasn't a miserable piece of junk until my wife got her GS3. Screens, keyboards, 4-hour battery life, digitizers, blah, blah, blah. I did have an a920 back in 2005 that was rock-solid, but it wan't as smartphone. Interestingly enough, it did have two external speakers, though. I can document the hell out of those problems, but I can't document many problems with the HTC devices I've owned. Not that they've been perfect, because they haven't been. But they've certainly lived up to the unintentional abuse I tend to put my phones through.

I've said it before and I'll repeat it here: one cycle of smartphone goodness and timely updates by Samsung doesn't make them rock stars in my book. Conversely, one cycle of smartphone goodness and less timely updates by HTC doesn't make them devil worshipers. One cycle does not a trajectory make. For me, at least.

Very well said, I think the one thing that everyone can agree on is that each manufacturer has strengths and weaknesses and can always do better in one category or another. If anything, the debates should be split into three categories. Hardware, Software and Manufacturer because as soon as we start grouping them together the lines get blurry and mud starts being thrown.

Does the bezel on the htc one look abit thick and annoying or is it just me

As I started seeing it in use more, I agree to an extent. The One is a beautiful phone, but I still give the HTC One X best looking phone ever created. Just my opinion.

Well I preface my comments that I base my opinions on recent history and not knowing the future. I think htc is certainty making steps in the right direction but until they prove otherwise I'll have my doubts on the "one".

Well I feel like it's pretty safe to assume what you will get from the s4. Sammy had success with the s3 so for better or worse this will be much of the same. HTC is a little more unknown. All indications look like the hardware is top notch and presumably, personal preferences aside, people shouldn't have much to complain about there. But htc has not performed stellar lately when it comes to software and support. I'm still waiting to see if this phone will stand up to the stress people will put it through and still perform and also get decent battery life.

I'm not bashing a phone I've never used but I think the entire premise of this thread is ridiculous. There's no way I'll say the "one" is superior to the s4 when it's not even released yet. Based off htc in the past there's no precedent to make that assumption. And if we say that the "one" comes out and is actually better than the s4 is still won't sell better than the s4

I do hope that the HTC One will mean they will focus on timely updates.

Personally, I was excited to hear the big announcement from Samsung and watched the live-stream and once they said "Life-Companion" I stopped watching. I'm not a fan of making any phone a huge necessity for life, especially to make it seem like you can't live without it. Marketing oiiii.. I had purchased the Galaxy S3 a little over three months ago and after the 3 weeks of using it, I sold it. Many things I didn't like starting with build quality, the wake/power button and the volume rocker were an issue for me. Whenever I would try to higher or lower the volume i'd accidently hit the power. I also was not a huge fan of the home button either and pressing down on it felt like I was always going to drop it because I had to shift my hand down to reach it. The plastic really did it for me. Someone had said here that after using it awhile the phone felt "old" and i'd have to agree. I wasn't happy. TouchWiz wasn't a big thing for me either.. some features were useful but I never really found myself using them. Maybe I'm a basic smartphone user lol.

However, I feel the same way with the Galaxy IV. 5 inch screen.. same design, new features that the S3 is going to get from what I read in articles.. is it really worth it? IMO, no because when will I really use all those features?! The HTC one is very appealing and I will most likely buy the One. I reverted back to my iPhone 4s after I sold the galaxy s3 and i'm so bored of iOS. I love the build quality though, dropped it several times and screen never shattered(though I had a heart attack whenever it did hit the ground). It has some scrapes here and there but in good condition. I'm ranting.. So when I layed eyes on the One, I immediately saw top notch build quality with front-facing speakers and a gorgeous screen. Under the hood, very impressive and hope updates to the phone are quick. Currently on Verizon and updates take 10 years later to receive.. cancelling and switching to T-Mobile after we finally get a release!

btw, loving this thread

Finally found someone who had the same issue as me. I constantly kept turning my S3 off by accident when going for the volume buttons due to the way I was holding it. I realise it is because of my big muppet hands and although not world-shattering it was still annoying. I put a launcher on mine very early on as Touchwiz didn't do anything for me. It wasn't that it was bad, it's just that it left me a bit cold.

I held out longer than you before I got rid of mine. I waited until they launched the iPhone 5 and bought one of those instead (I know, I know, boo hiss etc). I've still got my S2 though which I will replace probably with the HTC One (70/30 leaning towards it now).

For me it wasn't a lack of or delay in android updates. HTC did a horrible job with pr when it came to android updates but they got them out in a reasonable time Imo for the EVO. It was bug fixes and marketing where htc failed to support the phone. I felt like the phone was forgotten by htc and they didn't value their user base.

So far htc seems to be taking a better approach with the one. Only time will tell. But i would bet htc won't lag Samsung in android updates by anything significant

They really want back so I think they will push.

Yeah... if they ever even get to releasing the device in US... So far, the newest update on the release date is mid-April.. right?
That's basically around when the s4 is gonna come out. HTC just screwed up big time, even when 'pushing' themselves...

Yup, I would imagine so but it doesn't seem like they're pushing the black version of the One. In every video demo and review I've seen, its been the white version. There aren't a lot of phones out there I like in white (One X is sole exception, and maybe white iPhone 4S) so I'm hoping to see more glimpses of the black version.
