The iPhone SE 2020 basically just killed the Pixel 4a and other value flagships...

True. Definitely an advantage of not spending $1,000+ for a flagship. I pointed out Samsung's A70 and even the A50 works for me, especially because I could care less about the camera.

My sister is using the 6S and considering upgrading.

I think it will help push a Google to do better, which is good for us.

Absolutely! I'm hoping Google will follow in Apple's footsteps for once! Paying $1000+ for a flagship phone is starting to be too much for me. I'd be perfectly content with a Google mid-range phone with killer specs.

You guys are reading WAY too deep into this. Most people I know need more than 64GB of storage and even 128GB might not be enough for them. Can the phone out sell every other phone, sure. You guys seem to feel that 64GB is enough, well that's perfect for you.
I think you believe the general public is like you and me. They aren't.

You’re seeing, even on these forums, where people are tired of paying over $1000 for a smartphone. This is a great move by Apple and these will sell like hotcakes.

I really like the idea of including the latest chip on a cheap device, performance and updates will be pretty good. But that's it I think. What I see is a phone with a tiny screen, huuuuge bezels and a screen-to-body ratio of ~65%, all numbers basically the same than my old Moto G that I bought in 2013.

Many people love smaller phones, but in this case the biggest corner being cut is a tiny (by today's standards) display in a not so small frame.
This, plus the camera seems really average at best, and there is only 3GB RAM and 64GB storage (base). Even the battery is awful (1960mah!! Can't recall a phone with such a bad battery). This phone is outdated in every aspect other than the processor. A processor is only as good as what the rest of the hardware is capable of. The Pixel 3a is already better than the SE in every way other than chip, the 4a has already won...

That's because it's the shell of an iPhone 8 with the innards of an iPhone 11. The fact that many components are essentially identical to the iPhone 8, with all the tooling, R&D and such all covered for meant that they could practically slap in the latest and greatest SoC among other things and still be able to charge as little as they did.

It's the same philosophy as the original SE (an iPhone 5S shell with the innards of an iPhone 6s). They didn't make this phone to excite, or impress or to push the boundaries (not even close). They made this phone with the express intent of appealing to iPhone users who want a new iPhone with current-gen hardware but do not want to move on to the design of the iPhone X (whether that's due to the lack of TouchID, gestures or other reasons) or felt that moving to an iPhone 11 would be too expensive (especially in the current situation we're in).

If you want a phone with slimmer bezels, a bigger battery, dual or triple cameras or such, the iPhone SE isn't the phone for you. They're targeting a very specific customer with this phone, just like the previous SE.

But you're claiming that people won't be able to use a 64GB phone only because you can't use a 64GB phone. lol

What some people are missing is that there are folks who like TouchID, who like their current iPhone (6-8) but want a refreshed version with a better processor/camera.
The SE fills that void. My wife is on the iPhone 8 and refuses to get the 11Pro (even though it is slightly larger it's a no go). So this phone makes sense.

Also for a lot of people who didn't upgrade to the newer iPhones because they are expensive, the new SE even cuts the base iPhone 8 by $50 so it is the right play by Apple.

SE pros
Water resistance
Wireless charging
OS updates for at least 5 years
Great video
64GB to 256GB storage option available

SE Cons
Bezels and 4.7" screen
No headphone jack
No night mode or portrait for non humans

Pixel 4A Pros
Large display
Headphone jack
Great still photos including portrait and night sight
Direct updates from Google for 2-3 years

Pixel 4a Cons
No water resistance
No wireless charging
Average video quality
Only 64GB storage option

I consider battery life, speaker quality to be a wash between the two devices.

Comes down to small compromises in either device and OS preference. Also I think it is great that consumers have a choice of such amazing devices for $399.
I don't think everyone needs a $1000 smartphone.

What this tells me with Apple and Google is manufacturers are starting realize prices are little too high last few years and they coming up these versions which are great .

If I can get camera experiences and clean OS that are similar to their flagship models, then I might have to rethink my carry habits. Maybe it isn't one flagship, but two budget models instead. Excessive habits will find a way to permeate this corner of tech too =/

The 4a has at the very least a 128GB option, and it might be the only option. That's been in the spec leaks the past few days. Also, if the 3a is anything to go by, the 4a should have better battery life than the SE with a larger screen.

I mean instead of a Pixel 4, Galaxy S20, or iPhone 11 Pro, one could get a Pixel 4a and iPhone SE.

And still have enough for a mid-range Sammy like the A or M series, versus getting a Pro Max or S20 Ultra.

Oh man.

I keep asking the question but nobody seems to know answer. Exactly how do hotcakes sell? I've never even seen a hotcake.

If they offer 128GB while holding the price at $399 for the 4a that would be excellent.
