The kinda-official LG G4 bootloop thread

My trusty G4 which has served me flawlessly since 8/15 went into the dreaded boot loop tailspin last night. This phone is a 505. Everything gets stored/saved/downloaded to a 200GB SD card as well as Carbonite so nothing of importance is lost. A replacement is already being expedited from AT&T. Using my G2 until the "new" G4 arrives. Keeping fingers crossed. Will update everyone when she arrives.

Mine died last night as well. It's a Verizon model I purchased in November. This sucks. I placed a claim but LG hasn't contacted me yet to fix it.

Verizon won't replace it for you? Don't they offer at least a one year warranty/defective exchange of some kind?

I thought s/n 505 & 506 were the only ones affected by the bootloop issue.

My first g4 was a 505, new one is 508. Seeing 509's are also conking out now im worried.

It wouldn't shock me if LG was "recycling" old problematic 505 and 506 MoBos into 508s and 509s. At the end of the day, all they care about is the almighty dollar.

It's sad that reports of faulty G4s keep coming in without seeing LG addressing the matter in a more proactive way than merely offering warranty service. If they want to keep customers returning to their products, they surely are not doing their best.
They certainly aren't.

This thread is still one of the top subthreads in the LG G4 forum and is still getting replies every day.

Given how popular it is, LG should probably issue an update on the situation and do more in order to keep their customers. Because their response is lacking.

Just an FYI for anyone on T-Mobile: as of 5/1 they no longer offer loaner phones. Prepared to be completely screwed if your G4 dies and you don't own a backup phone.

The replacement G4 just arrived. Low and behold it's a 505. Hopefully that might indicate that it was a prior "boot looper" that was actually correctly repaired by LG. We shall see!

I'd be really damn cautious if I were you.

Would they go through the time and effort to replace the motherboard or perform some sort of manual fix. Easier just to toss away, no? Which means you may want to run that thing hot and heavy for a few days to see if you can get it to bootloop before your warranty expires.

After combing through 22 pages on this thread, I too had to join the forum and contribute. My S/N 506 (purchased last August 2015) bricked/bootlooped Wed. night. Chatted with VZW agent to document the problem, called Technical Team Tier 2 Thurs. morning. Paid $12.99 to overnight the replacement G4 which arrived Fri. afternoon (today). Lo and behold, they sent me a 505. We shall see how this goes.

I've been trying various lengths in the freezer on the old brick, only able to get the bootloop or the hard reset screen. For peace of mind, I'd like to factory reset the device before I send it back to VZW, but based on what I've read here they will wipe it as standard operating procedure? I would rather wipe it myself if possible, but not sure that will happen.

I got my replacement yesterday. 511 s/n... we'll see how this does while I work a way to get out of the $300 I owe VZW and switch to AT&T.

I contacted LG and Verizon to see if they could do anything to compensate me for the $300 I owe on a phone that I've replaced three times due to hardware issues - of course they won't do anything.

LG could only repeat that they wanted me to send the phone into them so they could repair it (they'd keep it 7-9 business days) - I kept telling them I already put in a claim with VZW and they're sending me a replacement and I have to send it back to VZW - they didn't understand this apparently.

The guy I spoke to at Verizon was nice though. He tried to give me options and explained to me that VZW has a deal with LG to get the bad unit from customers and then send to LG for repair (essentially the middle-man), but they couldn't do anything for me as far as compensation. Even after threatening to leave VZW - which I was serious about.

So now I'm going to have to go to AT&T, get an iPhone, sell the iPhone and then buy a Nexus 6P with the profits. Then AT&T will buy out the $300 I owe to VZW and such. I just do not want the G4 anymore, and it's unfortunate.

well at least you have a backup, a lot of folks don't when their G4 dies - and that sucks

And that's really the sad part. There's no prior warning before the phone goes into heaven, which means it can die when you would least expect it.

One additional note to my first data point. The 507 that was my first bootloop experience was made in Korea, so I guess I've had both Korean and Chinese made phones that have bootlooped. =/

Both my 505 and 512 were made in Korea.

I don't think it is completely related to where they were made since LG would have the same quality-control principles in both factories, but it is an extra bit of info.

The factories may have the same official quality control policies, but that doesn't mean both follow every rule. They could also get different batches of components from their suppliers, may also use different vendors for some parts, etc. That's why I got to wondering. Heck, it's not unheard of for a vendor to demo a fully compliant part to a manufacturer, only to cut corners on the full product run in effort to cut their costs and hope that the manufacturer doesn't notice the reduced quality.

You've been watching the movie Disclosure too much. 😉

That is another possibility.
